Interim Chief Financial Officer

We are seeking an experienced Interim CFO to provide immediate financial leadership for a university. This role will serve as a strategic and operational partner to the President and senior leadership team during a period of transition, ensuring financial stability, regulatory compliance, and support for the institution’s academic and research mission.Key Responsibilities Lead the development and execution of the university’s annual operating and capital budgets (multi-hundred million dollar scale). Oversee financial reporting, treasury management, endowment and investment oversight, debt strategy, and cash flow optimization. Partner with academic and administrative leaders on resource allocation, enrollment-driven revenue strategies, and cost management initiatives. Qualifications CPA and/or MBA/CMA strongly preferred; minimum 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience. Significant prior experience as a CFO, Deputy CFO, or Controller in higher education, complex non-profits, or research institutions is highly desired. Demonstrated success managing large, multi-fund budgets with diverse revenue streams (tuition, grants, auxiliaries, philanthropy, and investments). Strong understanding of higher education finance trends, including enrollment management, research funding, and facilities financing. Proven ability to collaborate with academic leaders and operate effectively in a shared governance environment. Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial audiences.Assignment Details Interim role expected to last 6–12 months with potential for extension. Immediate start preferred. On-site leadership presence required (West Coast location).
