Linux System Engineer

About the RoleWe are seeking a Senior Linux/Unix Systems Engineer, you will serve as the technical owner of a large-scale enterprise Linux environment, leading architecture, modernization, automation, security, and cloud migration initiatives. This role combines hands-on engineering, platform strategy, operational leadership, and mentorship while supporting mission-critical systems across RHEL and Oracle Linux environments.ResponsibilitiesEngineering and DesignOwn the architecture, standards, and lifecycle management of enterprise RHEL and Oracle Linux environments.Design and maintain automation, patching, and configuration management solutions using Ansible, Red Hat Satellite, and related tools.Lead OS upgrades, platform modernization efforts, and on-premises to cloud migration projects.Develop and maintain security hardening standards aligned with CIS, STIG, FISMA, and NIST requirements.Drive performance optimization, capacity planning, vulnerability remediation, and operational resilience.Design and validate high-availability, backup, and disaster recovery solutions.Technical LeadershipAct as the highest escalation point for Linux infrastructure incidents and critical outages.Lead root cause analysis efforts and drive corrective actions.Mentor Linux administrators and review scripts, configurations, and change implementations.Represent the Linux platform in architecture reviews, change management, and stakeholder discussions.Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational procedures.Operations and SustainmentInstall, configure, and support enterprise Linux systems, primarily Red Hat environments.Manage monitoring, system performance, backups, patching, and upgrades.Ensure security compliance through hardening, vulnerability management, and regular audits.Troubleshoot hardware, software, networking, and infrastructure-related issues.Support incident response activities and provide on-call assistance when required.Maintain accurate system documentation and operational records.QualificationsBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent experience may be substituted.8+ years of Linux/Unix administration and engineering experience.3+ years in a senior, lead, or principal-level role with ownership of Linux architecture and design.Expert-level experience with RHEL 8+ administration and engineering; Oracle Linux experience preferred.Strong experience with Ansible, Red Hat Satellite, infrastructure automation, and configuration management.Proven background leading OS migrations, platform modernization, and cloud adoption initiatives.Knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, VPNs, Active Directory, and enterprise infrastructure technologies.Experience with VMware, Hyper-V, and other virtualization platforms.Proficiency in Bash, Python, Git, and infrastructure-as-code practices.Experience supporting AWS and/or Azure environments and cloud migration strategies.Strong understanding of CIS, STIG, vulnerability management, FISMA, and NIST SP 800-53 controls.Excellent communication, problem-solving, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.Ability to work independently and participate in on-call support rotations.Required Certification: RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator).Must be eligible to obtain a Public Trust clearance.U.S. Citizenship required.Preferred SkillsRHCE, LPIC-2, Linux+, or Security+ certifications.AWS or Microsoft Azure Associate certification.Experience with high-availability, disaster recovery, and enterprise backup solutions.Large-scale Linux platform modernization and cloud migration experience.
