Trenchless Engineer - Microtunnelling (Professional Engineer)
Our client provides highly specialized engineering support across complex infrastructure projects and delivers advanced downhole tools for directional drilling applications.
We are seeking a motivated and driven Trenchless Engineer specializing in Microtunnelling to join a growing and dynamic team. This role is primarily office-based, with periodic field assignments for construction inspection and site oversight.
We welcome candidates located anywhere in the United States, provided they hold a Professional Engineer (PE) designation and have 3–4 years of direct microtunnelling experience within an engineering consultancy or contractor environment.
Responsibilities Office Responsibilities Develop detailed microtunnel design drawings, calculations, and technical documentation
Manage and delegate projects while serving as the primary client contact and corporate representative
Coordinate communication between clients, field teams, and internal project staff
Lead initiatives to standardize and improve project delivery systems and workflows
Oversee quality control processes to ensure compliance with company and industry standards
Manage project scope, budget, and schedule performance
Prepare, review, and approve project deliverables, including:
Cost estimates and schedules
Engineered drawing development, checking, and sign-off
Equipment sizing, specifications, and datasheets
RFQs, bid evaluations, and award recommendations
Contract preparation, including scope of work (EWP) documentation
Develop and maintain strong client relationships to support ongoing and future business opportunities
Conduct periodic project site visits as required
Field Responsibilities Act as the client’s on-site representative in a professional and accountable manner
Review and monitor compliance with contract documents, codes, standards, and applicable regulations
Participate in contractor daily safety meetings (including JSAs) and conduct company-specific JSAs
Complete Daily Inspection and HSE Reports
Issue and monitor work authorization permits; document site activities with photographs and collect as-built data
Monitor contractor adherence to microtunnel design and report deviations
Track and report operational metrics, including:
Rates of penetration
Slurry and bentonite properties
Pump offsets
Face pressure targets vs. actual performance
Tunneling plan adjustments and alignment changes
Conduct detailed safety inspections to ensure equipment meets industry standards and certification requirements
Assist with work pad development, site access, and equipment mobilization
Implement drilling fluid disposal procedures in accordance with the Mud Disposal Plan, including soil sampling and compliance coordination
Complete daily Microtunnel Inspection, Tunneling Fluid, and Steering Reports
Coordinate Emergency Response Plans, site orientations, and contractor training documentation
Source construction water and coordinate water withdrawal permits
Manage purchase orders and monitor site costs, productivity, and downtime
Collect soil and cuttings samples for laboratory analysis when required
Business Development Maintain and expand client relationships through proactive engagement and contract negotiation
Support proposal preparation and manage business opportunities aligned with operational capabilities
Participate in client meetings, presentations, and technical sessions showcasing company expertise
Collaborate with operational teams to support complex projects and identify opportunities to expand existing scopes of work
Qualifications A minimum of 3-4 years of direct experience with trenchless methods, including:
Direct Steerable Pipe Thrusting (DSPT) (required)
Experience with additional trenchless technologies such as Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), pipe jacking, and auger boring is an asset
A minimum of 3–4 years of relevant experience within engineering consulting or contracting
Bachelor of Science in Civil, Geotechnical, or Mechanical Engineering preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) designation required
Experience working with municipal or pipeline infrastructure operators is an asset
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
Detail-oriented, highly organized, and proactive in managing responsibilities
