Job Description & Employee Agreement – Director of Family Programs
The Director of Family Programs is a vital member of the organization. They oversee the Family Programs, which include Transportation, Full Hearts, and Family Events. They are responsible for ensuring families are receiving the highest quality of supportive services throughout their pediatric cancer journey. They assist in guiding the team and building sustainable programs to meet families' needs.

Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services exists to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and support their families in the challenges they face. We provide family-centered care that addresses the emotional, practical, and financial struggles of families of children and teens in treatment for cancer or other certain life-threatening conditions of a child. We envision a community where every child with a serious or life-threatening condition has a strong, supported, and informed family able to participate fully in their care. We strive to inspire compassionate action within local communities to create a safety net of support for the unique needs of each child and family.
Essential Functions
The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by the Director of Family Programs and not a comprehensive inventory of all duties, tasks, and responsibilities. Employees may also perform other duties as assigned.
Oversee the management of the Family Programs Team by leading, motivating, and supporting within a time-sensitive and demanding environment, including career development plans for direct reports and problem resolution.
Ensure the smooth and proper functioning of current programs while overseeing the development of program delivery with a focus on expansion in Santa Clara County
Cultivate and maintain relationships with organizational partners
Suggest innovative plans and processes to improve program functions
Analyze program results and present findings to management
Seek out new and creative program ideas to implement
Serve as a guiding figure in the office to make sure our programs and services align with our mission and values
Participate in strategy and protocols for the organization as part of the leadership team
Serve on the leadership team and share the responsibility of fiscal and administrative stewardship of the organization, including compliance, risk management, and quality improvement
Attend Board and Family Advisory Committee meetings
Promote an atmosphere of dignity, integrity, strict confidentiality, and respect in line with the philosophy and policies of HIPAA.
Work closely with the Director of Family Services to develop and implement programs that directly support families (i.e., Full Hearts, Transportation, Grief Support, Teen Group, Support Groups, Art from the Heart, Camp Heart & Hands, Forever Loved, Holiday Hearts, & misc family events)
Utilize training as necessary to continue to provide high-quality services to children and their families as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Assist with the coordination and implementation of support groups.
Assist with and attend family, community, and outreach events.
Perform other duties as assigned.Ideal candidate will:
Have a deep understanding of and experience in direct services
Possess strong coaching and mentorship skills
Be compassionate and comfortable working with children who have cancer, their siblings, parents, and extended family as well as working with families who are bereaved by the loss of a child due to cancer.
Have the ability to manage and maintain the confidentiality of information; determine the appropriate course of action in emergencies and other stressful situations
Have strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
Have passion, idealism, and integrity as well as have a positive attitude, be mission-driven, and self-directed
Possess a strong work ethic and unwavering dedication to the well-being of children and families
Be knowledgeable in Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Slack
Have the ability to work some evenings and weekend events
Be able to stand for long periods of time, and to lift to 25 pounds
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Collaborative Health & Human Services, Business Administration, Sociology, or other related fields or related work experience if the degree is in an alternate field.
Supervisor or management experience
Fluency in Spanish
Valid CA driver’s license and clean DMV record
Ability to pass a background check
CPR/First Aid Adult-Pediatric Certification Preferred (if not, class is provided)Benefits:
