Communications ManagerPosition OverviewHours Required: 20/wkThe Communications Manager leads the development and execution of strategic communications that elevate Plastic Ocean Project’s mission, programs, and impact. This role is responsible for crafting compelling narratives, managing digital platforms, and ensuring consistent, mission-driven messaging across all channels. The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller, highly organized, and passionate about environmental conservation and community engagement. This position plays a vital role in amplifying Plastic Ocean Project’s voice, growing community engagement, and inspiring action toward reducing plastic pollution. Through strategic storytelling and digital outreach, the Communications Manager helps connect people to the mission and drive meaningful environmental change.Key ResponsibilitiesContent Creation & StorytellingDevelop and manage engaging content across social media, newsletters, website, and marketing materialsWrite compelling captions, campaigns, and long-form storytelling that highlight organizational impactTranslate complex environmental issues into accessible, inspiring messagingCapture and share stories from events, cleanups, volunteers, and community initiativesSocial Media & Digital StrategyPlan, schedule, and execute social media content calendarsMonitor engagement, trends, and analytics to optimize performance each monthMaintain brand voice and consistency across all digital platformsCreate visual content concepts including reels, carousels, and campaign graphicsEvent & Program CommunicationsPromote events such as cleanups, fundraisers, educational programs, and community initiativesProvide real-time or post-event coverage through social media and recap contentCollaborate with program teams to highlight impact and participation and communityIntern Coordination & SupportGuide and support communications interns in content creation and project executionDelegate tasks and provide feedback to ensure high-quality outputFoster a positive and educational environment for student involvementPublic Relations & OutreachAssist in developing partnerships and community relationships through communications effortsSupport media outreach, press materials, and public-facing messagingEnsure consistent representation of the organization’s mission and valuesBrand & Messaging ManagementMaintain cohesive branding across all communication channelsEnsure messaging aligns with organizational goals and campaignsContribute to long-term communications strategy and campaign planningQualifications2+ years of experience in communications, social media management, or related roleExceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skillsExperience managing social media platforms and content planning toolsStrong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projectsBasic graphic design or video editing skillsPassion for environmental conservation and community-driven workPreferred SkillsBachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Environmental Studies, or related field (or equivalent experience)Experience with nonprofit communicationsPhotography or content capture experienceFamiliarity with email marketing platforms and analytics toolsKey AttributesCreative and detail-orientedSelf-motivated and collaborativeAdaptable in a fast-paced, mission-driven environmentStrong interpersonal and communication skills
