Transfer Counselor - Community College Partnerships
Position Summary
The University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for a Transfer Counselor who will support and empower students from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) as they navigate their transfer journey to UVA. This student-centered professional will play a critical role in building pathways, removing barriers, and ensuring a smooth transition for prospective transfer students-particularly those eligible for Federal Pell Grants.
Responsibilities
Provide individualized advising to prospective PVCC transfer students on academic options, admission requirements, and student life at UVA.
Develop and implement outreach programs that increase awareness of the full range of opportunities available at all of UVAs undergraduate schools, and help PVCC students explore and identify opportunities they consider good matches for their interests, talents, and aspirations.
Serve as a guide throughout the transfer process—from application preparation to post-admission success planning.
Connect students to relevant PVCC and UVA resources for a seamless transition.
Coordinate the Piedmont Scholars Program, supporting Piedmont Virginia Community College students pursuing transfer.
Interact with prospective students across the VCCS system and provide information and guidance.
Serve as UVAs primary point of contact for the Transfer Virginia Portal.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with UVA and VCCS colleagues to strengthen partnership.
Maintain and update portal content to meet the needs of prospective transfer students.
Review portal information regularly to ensure accurate and transparent information is available.
Serve as a central resource for newly admitted transfer students as they acclimate to UVA.
Partner with Orientation and Transition Programs (OTP), supporting initiatives such as Transfer Transition Coaches, New Student Orientation, Wahoo Welcome, and National Transfer Student Week.
Plan and execute transfer achievement celebrations to honor students transitions and milestones.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
Experience advising community college or transfer students, especially in higher education or student affairs settings.
Familiarity with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
Understanding of barriers that transfer students face.
Strong organizational, communication, and public speaking skills.
Ability to explain complex academic pathways clearly.
Ability to collaborate across institutions and geographic locations.
Familiarity with Office, Student Information System, Slate, Common App, Canva, or other tools.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree or higher. Additional experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree in some positions.
Three years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience advising community college or transfer students in higher education or student affairs settings.
Familiarity with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
Understanding of barriers that transfer students face.
Strong organizational, communication, and public speaking skills.
Ability to explain complex academic pathways clearly.

Preferred Skills
Follow admissions policies and procedures and adhere to regulatory guidelines in daily work.
Demonstrate thoughtful and appropriate oral and written communication in daily interactions, with an ability to advise prospective students, parents, and families about University admissions.
Have knowledge of basic computer applications and possess basic knowledge of the University’s educational mission, strategic aims, and programs.
Driver’s license required.
Salary Range
The anticipated hiring range is $50,000 - $55,000, commensurate with education and experience.
Position Type & Work Location
Exempt-level, benefited position. This is a restricted position dependent on funding and contingent upon funding availability.
Position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and is eligible for a hybrid schedule including regular office hours at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC), travel to other VCCS campuses and UVA as needed. Occasional evening and weekend hours required for special events.
