Why does the job exist?This position exists in District Three because it is the largest metro district within the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). It has the most urban roadways with a greater number of signs that are more prone to be displaced and knocked down. District Three has its own crew that primarily handles sign and delineation maintenance. The crew's overall objective and goal is to prioritize the sign maintenance needs district-wide, as sign maintenance plays a significant part of keeping our roadways safe. Prioritizing the maintenance of traffic control devices assists the NMDOT to provide prompt action for sign maintenance per safety needs and public requests. How does it get done?The duties and tasks associated with this position require coordination with the advanced position and sign crew supervisor. The incumbent assists the crew to remove and install signs and delineators, operate the transport truck to pick up materials and/or large extruded panel signs, and operate a loader to break down materials and/or move items to the recycling area. This position is also responsible for installing and picking up traffic counters and collect various traffic data as directed by traffic staff. Administrative tasks require daily input into the Maintenance Management System (MMS) regarding all field work performed, supports maintaining inventory of the signs at the District Three sign shop, and performs regular maintenance for equipment that is utilized. Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have experience in the following:Ability to install single post roadway signage.Experience in following NMDOT's standard drawings related to sign installation.Experience in safe traffic control set-up and maintenance.Experience with utilizing the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft applications such as Outlook and Excel. Minimum QualificationSix (6) months of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loader, five (5) and ten (10) yard dump trucks, self-propelled brooms, rollers, or mowers. Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker, and/or Hazmat endorsement. Employment RequirementsThis position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire. Tanker Endorsement may be required. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better. Working ConditionsWork is performed outside in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, wind, rain and snow, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical expenditure; irregular hours day or night; to include but not limited to standing for extended time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; subject to call out for weather or accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; work may also be performed in an office setting to include working with computers, faxes, copiers and printers; use of hands to finger, handle or feel while performing various assigned maintenance duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; ability to lift up to 50 lbs; climbing, reaching, kneeling, crawling to perform equipment maintenance. Exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals, airborne particles and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic; load noises.
