Performs maintenance inspections on assigned equipment and may assist mechanic with repairs. Performs routine manual labor as required.Essential Job FunctionsEquipment OperationMust have at least two (2) years experience operating a minimum of seven (7) pieces of the following equipment: dump truck, roller, tiller, bush hog, front end loader, tractor, motor grader, backhoe/excavator, chip spreader, bulldozer, box blade boom mower.May operate other equipment as assigned.Required to wear uniforms as directed by the County Engineer.Equipment MaintenancePrior to operating equipment, performs safety and maintenance inspection of assigned equipment.While equipment is being operated, continuously monitors gauges and other indicators for non-standard conditions.Performs light maintenance and servicing in connection with equipment operated.Notifies Supervisor/Assistant Supervisor of mechanical or safety problems. May assist mechanic with mechanical failure repairs.Manual LaborUses chain saw to cut trees from right-of-way in emergency situations.Uses ax, bush ax, banjo blade to clear brush.Patches holes for the Paved Road Maintenance Program.Load and unload construction materials and supplies from trucks.Shovels asphalt, cinder, rocks, soil, and other materials.Assist with bridge repairs.Installs traffic signs for public safety.Directs traffic at job site.Performs related manual labor as required.Education and ExperienceHave a valid commercial driver's license (CDL Class B) and be insurable by the County's insurance standards.Two (2) years or more experience in operation of light construction equipment.Willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies or when required.Willing to travel to pick up material out of area.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesSkills to communicate information to supervisors and co-workers.Skills to complete routine forms and records.Skills to understand operator manuals, directives, procedures, and instructions.Moderate skills in the operation, maintenance and safe use of trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment.Knowledge of traffic regulations.Defensive driving skills.Knowledge of safety rules including accident causes and prevention.Ability to work independently without close supervision.Knowledge of county policies, procedures and rules.Baldwin County Commission and Baldwin County Sheriff's Office does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, marital status, disability, citizenship or veteran status in employment.
