Block booking will occur; the schedule will vary between 36 hours one week and 48 hours the next week. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you will be responsible for providing all geriatric nursing care, treatment, and services in a professional and prescribed manner. You will provide a variety of nursing care for infirm geriatric residents. Your role includes overseeing and training subordinate staff in specific resident care. You will observe and report resident behavior and physical condition. You will administer medical treatment and provide interventions according to the plan of care. In addition, you may act as a lead with limited supervision on assignments. This position works under the supervision of an RN or physician. When the LPN position is the charge nurse, you will oversee the functions of other LPNs and Certified Nursing Assistants on the unit. You will administer medication and perform treatments on an assigned unit as ordered by the physician and within the scope of your license. Medications may be in various forms including oral, enteral, parenteral, and suppository. Treatments may include sterile and aseptic wound cleaning and dressing, postural drainage and percussion, tracheostomy, gastrostomy and jejunostomy care and catheter care. You will observe and report the effectiveness of medications and treatments. Ensuring an adequate amount of supplies and medication is available is part of your responsibility. You will receive and deliver information regarding residents' medical, social, functional, and other needs. Participation in the shift report process is expected. Communication with residents, families, and staff is necessary to ensure appropriate care from the interdisciplinary team. You will complete the initial admission nursing assessment tool on newly admitted residents. Supervision of subordinate staff is required. Assisting with direct resident care for Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is essential. This includes bathing, dressing, observations, treatment, and summarization of resident progress. You will conduct and participate in in-service training and staff development programs. Attendance and participation in staff meetings is expected. You may collect and analyze data for quality improvement and infection control programs. Training new employees is part of your duties. You will perform other technical duties as assigned, such as collecting specimens and responding appropriately to emergency situations. Knowledge of gerontological/geriatric nursing theory and practice is essential. Understanding resident conditions and changing medical, physical, and psychological care needs is required. Awareness of the effects of the aging process is important. Knowledge of practices and procedures of team nursing is necessary. Familiarity with pharmacology and medicines is crucial. You must understand federal, state, and agency laws, rules, and regulations governing nursing practices. Practical nursing methods and techniques must be applied. Observation and reporting of resident behavior and progress are required. You will assist in developing and implementing patient care plans within a team nursing concept. Assessment of client needs and resource suitability is part of the role.
