Controls Engineer (3+ yrs PLC/HMI programming, industrial control systems exp. req.) Description
Our client in the data center cooling industry is looking for a Controls Engineer to join their team near Mesquite, TX. You will program, test, and commission the electrical and control systems that power liquid cooling equipment, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and instrumentation. You will support the full product lifecycle, from electrical schematics and panel design through shop-floor testing, troubleshooting, and occasional customer-site commissioning. Most projects begin with an established logic base, but you will gradually take ownership of software revisions, control algorithms, interfaces, and new product features in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment. You will initially work alongside a senior controls engineer before assuming greater responsibility for the controls platform. To be considered, you must have controls engineering experience involving fluid systems, PLC/HMI programming, VFDs, instrumentation, electrical schematics,
and hands-on troubleshooting. This is an opportunity to help shape products supporting AI and high-density computing while working with a collaborative, hands-on engineering team.
Controls Engineer (3+ yrs PLC/HMI programming, industrial control systems exp. req.) Responsibilities
Develop, modify and debug PLC/HMI programs for liquid cooling equipment
Implement control algorithms using ladder logic or CODESYS
Modify software for new products, features, and equipment upgrades
Support PLC migrations, communications upgrades, and new control features
Review electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and panel layouts
Work with VFDs, pumps, valves, sensors, and process control instrumentation
Perform functional testing, verify I/O, and evaluate operating sequences
Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and logic issues
Maintain software, drawings, redlines, and as-built documentation
Support panel wiring, energized testing, and factory acceptance tests
Provide remote support and occasional customer-site commissioning
Follow lockout/tagout procedures when working around energized equipment
Controls Engineer (3+ yrs PLC/HMI programming, industrial control systems exp. req.) Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience required
3+ years of programming PLC/HMI industrial control systems experience required
Experience with VFDs and process instrumentation (flow, pressure, temperature) required
Hydronic/fluid systems, process skid, HVAC, or liquid cooling experience required
Solid understanding of electrical schematics, panel layout, and NEC-compliant wiring required
Hands-on electrical testing and troubleshooting experience required
Willingness and ability to travel 5–10% domestically required
