Role Overview
The Chief Digital Officer (CDO) will be a senior executive responsible for driving growth, scalability, and competitive advantage through AI-enabled software platforms in a clinical genomics laboratory. This role sits at the intersection of genomic science, AI/ML, laboratory operations, and commercial scale, with direct accountability for transforming digital capabilities into measurable business outcomes.
The CDO will lead the evolution of the company’s software, genomics platforms, LIMS ecosystem, AI-driven analytics, and client-facing integrations, enabling the organization to scale test volume, reduce turnaround times, and deliver differentiated value to health system and provider partners.
This is a builder and growth role, focused on converting genomic data, AI, and software into durable market leadership.
Core Responsibilities
AI Strategy & Growth Enablement
Define and execute an AI-first digital strategy aligned to the genomics lab’s growth objectives, including:
Scaling test volume without linear cost increases
Improving turnaround time, quality, and operational efficiency
Supporting expansion into new genomic assays and service offerings
Identify and commercialize AI use cases that directly impact revenue, margin, and customer experience
Partner with executive leadership and the Board to translate AI investments into sustained business growth
AI, Machine Learning & Genomic Analytics
Lead enterprise deployment of AI/ML across genomics workflows, including:
AI-assisted variant interpretation and prioritization
LLM- and NLP-based clinical reporting and interpretation support
Intelligent automation across accessioning, QC, and lab operations
Predictive analytics for lab capacity, demand forecasting, and turnaround optimization
Ensure AI solutions are production-grade, explainable, auditable, and suitable for regulated clinical use
Establish governance for responsible AI in a clinical genomics environment
Scalable Digital Platforms & Software Engineering
Own architecture and delivery of scalable, cloud-native platforms supporting:
LIMS extensions and genomics workflow orchestration
Bioinformatics pipelines and AI-enabled analytics
Client-facing portals and integration middleware
Build reusable platform components to accelerate new test launches and client onboarding
Balance rapid innovation with reliability, security, and compliance
Client-Facing Epic Aura & Health System Integrations
Lead scalable, repeatable Epic Aura enablement for external health system clients, including:
Client-specific test catalogs and order workflows
Structured genomic results delivery into clinical workflows
Status updates, metadata exchange, and operational indicators
Standardize integration patterns to reduce onboarding time and cost
Treat interoperability as a growth accelerator, not just a technical requirement
Data, Governance & Compliance
Own enterprise data strategy across genomic, clinical, and operational datasets
Enable secure access to data for AI training and analytics while protecting PHI and IP
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, CLIA, CAP, and applicable international standards
Leadership, Scaling & Execution
Build and scale teams across AI/ML, software engineering, data, and product
Establish operating models that support rapid experimentation and disciplined delivery
Mentor leaders and foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and execution
Manage strategic vendors, technology partners, and research collaborations
Required Qualifications
12+ years of leadership experience in AI, software platforms, or digital transformation within healthcare, life sciences, or data-intensive environments
Proven success scaling technology platforms that directly enabled company growth
Deep experience taking AI/ML systems from concept through regulated production
Strong understanding of genomics laboratory workflows, including wet lab and dry lab operations
Experience supporting client-facing EHR integrations (Epic Aura or equivalent)
Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in regulated clinical environments
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience in clinical genomics, molecular diagnostics, or genetic testing laboratories
Experience commercializing AI-enabled products or platforms
Familiarity with bioinformatics pipelines and large-scale genomic datasets
Prior executive leadership experience in high-growth or transformation-stage organizations
