Senior Transportation Design Engineer

Senior Transportation Engineer Position Summary We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Transportation Engineer to join a dynamic and collaborative team on California's Central Coast. This role is responsible for leading the design and delivery of transportation projects for local agencies and state highway systems, from conceptual planning through final PS&E and construction support. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with proven project management, client coordination and leadership abilities. Key ResponsibilitiesLead the planning, design and delivery of transportation engineering projects for local roadways and state highways.Prepare and oversee development of preliminary engineering studies, technical reports, design calculations, plans, specifications, quantities and estimates (PS&E).Utilize Caltrans and local agency standards to develop compliant and constructible transportation designs.Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, public agencies, contractors and consultants throughout all project phases.Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, quality control and deliverable timelines.Support public outreach efforts, permitting coordination and environmental review processes.Provide construction phase support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals and resolving field issues.Supervise, mentor and train junior engineering staff while promoting professional development and adherence to QA/QC standards.Prepare technical proposals, participate in client interviews and assist with business development initiatives. Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.Active California Professional Engineer (PE) license required.Minimum of 9 years of progressive transportation engineering and roadway design experience.Strong experience with Caltrans standards, policies and procedures, including:Highway Design Manual (HDM)Project Development Procedures Manual (PDPM)Caltrans Standard PlansCalifornia MUTCD (CAMUTCD)AASHTO Green BookProficiency in CAD software and transportation design applications.Demonstrated project management experience involving scope, budget, scheduling and quality control.Experience preparing proposals, attending client meetings and supporting project pursuits.Excellent communication, leadership and organizational skills. Preferred QualificationsExperience coordinating environmental documentation and public outreach activities.Previous exposure to transportation construction support and field coordination.Strong understanding of local agency project delivery requirements.Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
