Data Team Development Intern
Data Team Development Intern Northeast Metro 916 is seeking a motivated Data Team Development Intern to support a multi-faceted modernization of our custom-built educational and administrative data systems. This paid internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with production systems that directly serve our unique group of students and staff.The intern will work alongside our District Data Team on initiatives including accessibility compliance remediation, cloud data infrastructure migration, and the formalization of our development workflows through GitHub-based source control. This role is well-suited to a computer science or software development student who is eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-world production environments supporting K-12 special education services.Key ResponsibilitiesAccessibility Compliance (WCAG 2.1 Level AA / ADA Title II)Review and remediate existing custom-designed data collection and visualization systems to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility requirements under ADA Title II.Implement accessibility improvements in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for custom web interfaces including the Classroom Data System and Work Experience / Employability Skills applications.Test applications with approved screen reader software and document remediation outcomes.Google Apps Script ModernizationAssist with migrating legacy Google Apps Script projects from the deprecated Rhino runtime to the V8 runtime.Refactor Apps Script code to utilize modern ECMAScript syntax, improved error handling, and updated Google service libraries.Validate JDBC connections, BigQuery data transfers, and triggers following runtime migration.GitHub-Based Development WorkflowSupport the transition of existing data systems into a formalized GitHub-supported source control environment.Help establish branching strategies, pull request conventions, and repository organization standards across team projects.Migrate loose script collections into versioned repositories with appropriate documentation.Assist team members with Git workflows using DataGrip, Visual Studio Code, and the clasp CLI for Apps Script deployments.General Team SupportParticipate in Data Team meetings, code reviews, and project planning sessions.Document technical work, including system descriptions, troubleshooting procedures, and knowledge transfer materials.Track project work using the team's project management tool (Shortcut).Qualifications (Not All Required)Current enrollment in, or recent completion of, a Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related coding / technical degree or certificate program.Working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.Familiarity with SQL and relational database concepts.Basic familiarity with version control concepts, including Git.Experience with Google Apps Script, Google Workspace APIs, or the Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Cloud SQL).Experience with GitHub pull requests, branching, and collaborative development workflows.Familiarity with Transact-SQL, PowerShell, or Python.Interest in or experience with K-12 education, special education, or public sector technology.Ability to work independently, manage time effectively across multiple projects, and ask clarifying questions when scope is ambiguous.Willingness to complete any required background check and to handle student and staff data in accordance with FERPA and district data privacy policies.What You Will GainHands-on experience with production systems supporting educational services for thousands of students.Exposure to a modern, cloud-integrated technology stack spanning Google Workspace, Google Cloud Platform, Laserfiche, SQL Server, and PowerShell automation.Mentorship from experienced developers across identity management, data engineering, application development, and workflow automation.Practical experience with accessibility standards and compliance-driven software remediation.A professional work sample suitable for portfolios, graduate applications, and future employment.Direct Questions To:Elam Noor, Director of TechnologyOffice: 651-415-5504 | Email: enoor@916schools.org
