Job Description
The Laboratory Supervisor position will provide technical leadership for the department supervised. The position will be responsible for test development, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, workflow coordination, department training and orientation, supervision of the technical and non-technical employees, and interaction with vendors. The Laboratory Supervisor shall maintain laboratory standards with accrediting bodies including, but not limited to AABB, CAP, CDC, CLIA, FACHT, FDA, JCAHO, and HCFA. Technical competence and good judgment are required as errors could result in serious consequences to patients.
Essential Functions
Completes and submits all Evaluations to the Laboratory Manager (includes Initial competency and skills assessment/validation)
Performs direct observation and ensures competency for all department staff
Monitors, trends, and reports all Quality Improvement indicators
Recommends and implements improvements necessary to achieve operational goals and to improve patient outcomes. Monitors quality control and proficiency testing for department
Ensures that accreditation standards are met for department in accordance with CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, AABB, FDA, OSHA, etc
Demonstrates comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals. Reviews Manuals biannually, revises procedures as necessary
Reviews test results, evaluates and resolves discrepancies. Investigates physician complaints
Distributes workload to section staff taking into consideration priority of work and skill of the employee
Prepares staff schedule to ensure adequate department coverage
Maintains staffing for call-ins or other unusual circumstances
Maintains an adequate reagent and supply inventory in the department
Evaluates new technologies for the section in conjunction with the Medical Director of the department
Collaborates with Manager and other Supervisors to meet the educational needs of the staff through presentations, educational materials, online learning, offsite meetings, etc
Makes recommendation to the Manager for hires, promotions, disciplinary actions and terminations
Meets regularly with section Medical Director and seeks involvement regarding capital purchases, operational, and technical issues

Other Functions
Identifies and reports any safety hazards or concerns
Follows up on all safety events for department
Documents attendance and tardy activity for department staff
Communicates to staff consistently. Holds section huddles daily
Attends required department or hospital meetings
Serves in a problem solving role for the department
Assists in the orientation of new department employees as demonstrated by the completed orientation checklist in the employees personnel file
Makes suggestions for improvements of procedures and workflow
Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Job Description
Education
MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(HEW), qualified as a technologist under CLIA rules, or equivalent. (required)
Appropriate Bachelor's degree required to meet CLIA rules
Experience
Four (4) years of hospital laboratory experience in department supervising (required)
Previous supervisory experience (preferred)
Previous experience with automated equipment in department supervising (preferred)
Certification
MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(HEW) (required)
Individuals that are newly certified beginning January 2004 must participate in the BOR Certification Maintenance Program
Specialty certification from American Society of Clinical Pathology (SBB,SC,SH,SM, SCYM, SMB) (preferred)
