Tool Designer-Manufacturing Internship

Position Overview: Tool Design Intern will support the design and development of production tooling and fixtures used in manufacturing operations. This role provides hands-on experience using SolidWorks to create 3D models and detailed drawings while applying design for manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Maintainability (DFMt) principles. The intern will work closely with engineering, production, maintenance, and safety teams, to ensure tooling solutions meet quality, safety, and operational requirements.Learning OutcomesBy the end of the internship, the candidate will be able to:Develop proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and 2D drawing creationApply design for manufacturability and maintainability principles in real-world applicationsUnderstand tooling design considerations including clearance, material selection, and safetyInterpret and revise engineering drawings and specificationsCollaborate cross-functionally with engineering, production, and maintenance teamsGain exposure to change control processes and documentation standardsUnderstand how tooling impacts product quality, cost, and production efficiencyPrimary ResponsibilitiesAssist in designing production tooling, fixtures, and related components using SolidWorksCreate and update detailed 2D drawings and 3D models in accordance with company standardsSupport design efforts by applying DFM and DFMt principlesEvaluate tooling designs for proper clearances, functionality, and safe operationRevise and update existing drawings based on engineering changes or production feedbackParticipate in design reviews and incorporate feedback into tooling designsEnsure documentation accuracy and proper version control within designated systemsSecondary ResponsibilitiesSupport material selection and basic analysis for tooling applicationsAssist in troubleshooting tooling-related issues on the production floorCoordinate with stakeholders including engineers, technicians, and production personnelHelp maintain organized CAD files, drawing libraries, and project documentationContribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling and process efficiencyObserve and learn manufacturing processes to better understand tooling application and performanceRequirementsSparton interns must meet the following criteria:Active pursuit of a Bachelor or Graduate degree at an Accredited Institution and be able to provide documentation to confirm your degree progress.(Please include any specific degree(s) or coursework that would be ideal for this internship) Current class standing of sophomore or above (30 credits)Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or aboveMust be 18 years of age or olderMust be a U.S. CitizenMust be able to work on-site in DeLeon Springs, FL Mentor: Senior Tool Designer Travel Requirement No travel requiredThe physical demands describe here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, talk, and communicate, use hands/finger, feel, and reach with arms. This position requires the ability to lift, bend or stoop as necessary up to 50lbs.
