Analytical-Heavy Synthetic Actinide Postdoc
What You Will DoThe Inorganic, Isotope, Actinide Chemistry group (C-IIAC) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking outstanding candidates for a postdoctoral position in the Heavy Element Chemistry (HEC) team, which will specialize in the study of fundamental lanthanide and actinide synthesis and spectroscopy. The successful candidate will join a team of chemists, spectroscopists, and theorists to conduct research that addresses the fundamental physical and chemical behavior of f-block complexes under rigorously air- and moisture-free environments. Responsibilities include implementing experimental design necessary to complete projects, executing experimental synthetic R&D including operating an inert atmosphere drybox and using Schlenk-line techniques, performing associated spectroscopic and magnetic studies needed to characterize the materials, and maintaining laboratory space and equipment. The candidate is expected to be self-motivated for success and to demonstrate a desire to perform at a high level with aspirations to develop into a leader in the field of chemistry. They are expected to present their work at national and international conferences and to foster publication of their results in appropriate refereed journals.Minimum Job RequirementsSynthetically adept with a desire to explore and/or develop multiple synthetic techniquesDemonstrated practical laboratory experience with molecular characterization techniques like ICP-MS, electrochemical techniques, NMR, UV/Vis-NIR and IR spectroscopies, and powder- and single-crystal X-Ray diffraction techniquesDemonstrated ability to safely handle, manipulate, and perform synthesis with reactive chemicals in a rigorously air- and moisture-free environment (Schlenk line and drybox techniques)Demonstrated record of technical excellence and innovative thinking as evidenced by multiple first-author publicationsA willingness and desire to learn new skills, develop additional proficiencies, develop relationships with those of different backgrounds, and work on emerging projects with collaboratorsEffective verbal and written communication skillsPersevering and remaining positive and productive throughout the lifetime of difficult projectsDesired QualificationsDemonstrated practical laboratory experience in safely handling lanthanide, actinide, and/or transition metal complexesDemonstrated practical laboratory experience in safely handling main-group (e.g., P, Ga, Si) complexesDemonstrated practical laboratory experience in safely working with flammable materialsPossess working familiarity with electrochemistry and electrochemical working knowledgeProven ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently to meet programmatic milestones and scientific goalsDemonstrated experience in applying fundamental scientific concepts to complex, multidisciplinary problemsEducation RequiredA PhD in organometallic/inorganic chemistry, main-group chemistry, or chemical engineering with a strong familiarity with inorganic chemistry, conferred within the past 5 years. The candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment.Work LocationThe work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.Employment RestrictionsDue to federal restrictions contained in the current National Defense Authorization Act, citizens of the People's Republic of China—including the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau—as well as citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Russian Federation, who are not Lawful Permanent Residents, are prohibited from accessing facilities that support the mission, functions, and operations of national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities, which includes Los Alamos National Laboratory.ContactIf interested, please contact Aaron Tondreau at tondreau_a@lanl.gov for questions or discussion regarding the project.BenefitsPPO or High Deductible medical insurance with same large nationwide networkDental and vision insuranceFree basic life and disability insurancePaid childbirth and parental leaveAward-winning 401(k) (6% matching plus 3.5% annually)Learning opportunities and tuition assistanceFlexible schedules and time off (PTO and holidays)Onsite gyms and wellness programsExtensive relocation packages (outside a 50 mile radius)Equal OpportunityLos Alamos National Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer.
