Violin Teaching Artist
BRAVO Youth Orchestras is a highly esteemed and influential non-profit organization that connects diverse students in Northern Portland with mentorship opportunities and multiple pathways to engage in the arts. Through its rich in-school and after-school programming, BRAVO Youth Orchestras helps boost academic achievement while supporting the development of creative, confident, community-minded artists. Since the program’s inception, BRAVO has helped thousands of students develop their own unique talents while promoting social justice, equity and advancement in the Pacific Northwest.
Job Summary
BRAVO Teaching Artist serves as a member of a vibrant team of teachers who lead daily sectionals with up to 25 students in our winds or strings program. TAs participate in teaching general musicianship classes and assist their section in full orchestra rehearsals by modeling positive, focused behavior and coaching students. The teaching team meets together at a one-hour, weekly meeting. TAs will also attend and assist at BRAVO performances on weekends or evenings (average 1-2 per month). BRAVO’s schedule closely follows the public school calendar.
Responsibilities
Curriculum and Teaching
● Identify and support growth and engagement of participants of after school programs
● Collaborate on curriculum/ learning objectives with the PM
● Lead/teach classes ○ Provide musical instruction in a (mostly) group setting. ○ Lead sectionals and provide individual attention ○ Support students to work on instrument-specific technique ○ Provide short private lessons based on an as-needed basis
● Work with PM to execute beginner sites annual assessments COMMUNICATION AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
● Utilize Communication with Intention best practices
● Establish and follow a model for feedback to ensure consistency
● Troubleshoot concerns regarding program participants AS NEEDED TASKS and RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Supporting other sites, such as playing on other site’s concerts or attending field trips, etc.
LEAD TEACHING ARTIST (LTA) ADDITIONAL DUTIES
In addition to the above responsibilities, the LTA will also have additional administrative responsibilities such as but not limited to supply management, copies, and coordinating with the school representatives.
HOURS and PAY
● TA’s and LTA’s receive an hourly rate of $32 (non-negotiable).
● TA’s work for approximately 15-17 hours per week. LTA’s work approximately 20 hours per week.
○ Most weeks are Monday through Thursday, 1:30pm - 5:00pm. (Approximately)
● All employees may participate in BRAVO’s retirement plan after three months of employment. BRAVO will match your contribution up to 3% of your pay.
