Substation Project Structural Engineer

Overview As Substation Project Structural Engineer you contribute to the design and analysis of high‑voltage switchyard and substation structures up to 500 kV, leading foundation and steel frame work. You collaborate with PMs and cross-office teams to deliver quality structural designs and mentor EITs. You shape practical solutions through code-compliant calculations and clear specifications. This role offers hands-on impact on grid modernization within an employee‑owned, collaborative culture. ResponsibilitiesPerform structural engineering for substation members (rolled steel shapes, lattice framing, folded plate tubulars) with detailed design, calculations, and fabrication-ready drawingsLead foundation design tasks (drilled piers, spread footings, piles) using industry softwarePrepare and/or review construction and material specificationsAssign tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non-structural team membersConduct quality checks per HDR QMS and review projects from other teams as neededCollaborate to develop and maintain design standards across the practiceWork independently and mentor/train EITs and DesignersManage multiple projects concurrently with teams across locationsParticipate in project reviews as requiredSome travel may be required Key requirementsBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural EngineeringProfessional engineering license (PE/P.Eng)Minimum 5 years of technical design experience in HV switchyard/substation projectsExperience with foundation and steel structural designProficiency with design software (PLS-Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD or MicroStation, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile or equivalents)Knowledge of AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318 and related standardsStrong written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in a teamExperience with architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firmsMicrosoft Office and relevant engineering softwareSelf-starterStrong communication (written and verbal)Collaborative and team-orientedPLS-TowerMathcad PrimeAutoCAD
