Temporary Field Support Coordinator – First-Year Outdoor ProgramAssignment Duration: July 6 – September 7Reports To: Director, First-Year Outdoor Program (FOP)Work Schedule: Full-time, in-person, with early mornings, late evenings, and weekend availability required during trip launch and return windows.Job SummaryHarvard’s First-Year Outdoor Program (FOP) is seeking a short-term Field Support Coordinator to assist with the launch, in-field support, and return of 40–50 outdoor orientation trips in August. This individual will play a critical operational role in ensuring safe and efficient trip logistics, responding to field-based needs, and assisting with student leader support throughout the trip window. This role is ideal for someone with strong outdoor leadership experience and logistical skills who can remain calm under pressure and work collaboratively with students and staff in a fast-paced environment.Key ResponsibilitiesTrip Operations & Field Logistics (60%)Assist with launching and receiving all FOP trips, including packing oversight, bus coordination, and field support communications.Respond to trip-related needs, including delivering resupplies, managing evacuations or early returns, and coordinating emergency response in collaboration with the FOP Director.Monitor radio and phone communication systems, track trip locations, and document any incidents or trip issues in real time.Support trip returns by coordinating gear intake, food cleanup, and debrief procedures.Leader Support & Risk Management (25%)Serve as a resource to student trip leaders during trip prep and while in the field.Assist with post-trip debriefs to ensure emotional and operational support.Contribute to implementation of existing safety protocols and help maintain trip tracking and emergency documentation systems.Gear & Logistics Coordination (15%)Work closely with student gear managers and logistics staff to ensure timely packing, loading, and unpacking of gear and food systems.Troubleshoot gear or food issues before and after trips, including restocking and repair support.Qualifications1–3 years of experience facilitating outdoor trips, including direct experience in field-based operations, trip launches, and/or emergency response coordination.Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or higher required.Valid driver’s license and clean driving record for the past two years.Excellent communication and decision-making skills under pressure.Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.Experience working with outdoor education programs at a higher education institutionWorking ConditionsWork occurs both in-office (Cambridge) and in the field (Southern Vermont/Western Massachusetts/New Hampshire).Must be able to lift and carry 50–70 lbs, hike up to 3 miles on uneven terrain, and assist in moving gear bins weighing up to 100 lbs (with team support).Housing may be provided during trip operations (August 20-25) depending on availability.
