Job Description
The Prevention Specialist will provide substance abuse prevention interventions to youth in local school districts and juvenile detention centers. The goal of these preventions is to provide patients the information and tools necessary to promote prevention and intervention of violent behavior and drug use among youth.
Essential Functions:
Provide behavioral training to youth and adults
Using community resources to conduct referrals for services including; behavioral counseling, substance abuse treatment, STD/TB Clinics, and other services
May be required to assist in other duties such as transport clients or watch client children
Must adhere to the Code Of Ethical Conduct For Prevention Professionals
Document daily activities related to work flow
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
A Minimum of documented experience in substance abuse prevention or a Bachelors Degree in Health and Human Services
Minimum of two years experience working with at risk populations
Must be willing to work a flex schedule that includes weekends and evenings
Must be able to adhere to all client related policies and procedures including confidentiality
Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position
Must be able to adhere to all client related policies and procedures including confidentiality
Requires a valid Texas Driver's License, appropriate driving record and auto liability insurance that meets the minimum required by State of Texas statute
Skills:
Must be able to communicate with youth on sensitive issues regarding violence and substance abuse in an understandable and non-judgmental manner
Must have good oral and written communication skills
Must be able to keep up-to-date and factual documentation and work with a curriculum that has been approved by area stakeholders
Educators must be very knowledgeable on STDs, HIV, substance abuse and other public health services
Able to schedule work activities according to priority
Energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards and an appropriate professional image
The ability to work independently and effectively under pressure
Superior organizational and problem solving skills
Familiarity with computer programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
The occupant may, at times, lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
