As a Field Metrologist, you'll take on hands-on measurement and alignment projects both in our shop and directly at client facilities across multiple industries. You'll use state-of-the-art laser trackers, portable arms, and cutting-edge metrology software to solve complex spatial, mechanical, and alignment challenges.If you enjoy problem-solving, working with advanced technology, collaborating with skilled field machinists, and tackling mechanical challenges in dynamic environments-you'll thrive here.Above all, we maintain a culture where Safety Comes First .RequirementsWhat You'll DoYou'll work under technical supervision to perform a wide range of metrology and alignment tasks, including:Metrology & MeasurementPerform on-site and in-shop measurements using various laser tracker and portable arm systems.Conduct precision measurement services on machinery, assemblies, structures, and components.Create inspection plans and part coordinate frames-often without CAD models or complete drawings.Produce clear, professional inspection reports with photos, tables, and technical explanations.Project ExecutionOrganize, pack, and maintain all metrology equipment for field projects.Follow daily reporting requirements including progress updates and photo documentation.Manage files in alignment with company standards.Assess equipment to be aligned or machined and provide meaningful, safe recommendations. Collaboration & CommunicationWork closely with field machinists to adjust processes on the fly when needed.Explain geometric alignment concepts clearly in writing and conversation.Communicate professionally with customer contacts and project teams.Document actions and handoffs to maintain seamless continuity between shifts. Alignment & Mechanical WorkPerform portable machine alignments and general equipment alignment tasks.Support surveys and diagnostics on customer machinery using metrology tools.Operate hand power tools occasionally as needed for project execution. What You'll BringEducationHigh school diploma or GED/HSED required2-year technical degree or documented on-the-job training preferredCMSC certification and OEM software training (Leica, Faro, Spatial Analyzer, Polyworks, etc.) are a plusExperience & Skills1-3 years' experience using portable metrology equipmentWorking knowledge of metrology softwareUnderstanding of GD&TAbility to read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprintsMechanical aptitude and comfort in industrial field environmentsExperience with machine alignments and mechanical measurement equipmentStrong computer proficiency and ability to troubleshoot software/hardware issuesExperience with machining or field machining is a bonus Core AbilitiesStrong spatial reasoning and 3D visualization skillsCritical thinking and problem-solving mindsetAbility to multitask in a fast-paced, ever-changing environmentExcellent communication skills (written & verbal)Strong organization and follow-through Physical & Work Environment RequirementsYou should be prepared for:Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbsWorking in industrial environments with machining, welding, overhead cranes, fumes, noise, and moving mechanical partsWorking outdoors in varying weather conditionsOccasional use of respiratorsFrequent travel to company shops and customer job sites (domestic and international) Additional RequirementsOSHA 10 certification, providedValid driver's licenseSuccessful completion of company forklift and overhead crane trainingAbility to use mobile apps for timesheets, travel, and expense reportingWhy Join Us?At In-Place Machining Company, you'll join a team of experts known for solving some of the toughest mechanical and measurement challenges in the world.
