Data Panel is a dynamic and growing company specializing in the design and manufacture of embedded electronic control systems for mobile equipment. Data Panel is based in Plymouth, MN and a subsidiary of Murrelektronik, a global automation company based in Oppenweiller, Germany and US headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Our solutions serve both “on-road” vehicles, such as utility and emergency vehicles, and “off-road” equipment, including construction and mining machinery. Our electronic control solutions can be thought of as an interesting blend between industrial controls and automotive electronics.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled embedded software engineer to play a dual role as both a leader and hands-on contributor to our engineering team. In this role, you will spend roughly half of your time managing projects and leading a team of software engineers, and the other half contributing directly to the development of our embedded software solutions. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing leadership responsibilities with technical challenges. We are open to this role being an entry level management position for the right candidate, as long as the candidate has experience managing projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Individual Contributor (~50%)
Actively participate in the design and development of embedded software solutions, contributing to coding, debugging, testing, and problem solving
Collaborate directly with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components
Stay current with the latest technologies and industry trends, applying this knowledge to improve our products and processes
Team/Project/Functional Leadership (~50%)
Manage, mentor, and lead a team of 3 software engineers
Oversee the design, development, and deployment of embedded software, ensuring it meets industry standards and customer needs
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, product managers, and sales, to align software development with business objectives
Drive the technical strategy and roadmap for software, contributing to the company’s growth and ensuring scalability
Implement and uphold best practices in software development, including code reviews, testing, and code-reuse policies
Draft, implement, and enforce software development policies or procedures where necessary
Manage project timelines, resources, and deliverables to ensure timely and high-quality outcomes
Lead and manage projects from inception to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time and within scope
Create, maintain, and oversee requirements documentation to ensure all stakeholders are aligned and the development process is clearly guided by well-defined objectives
Support the professional development of team members through coaching and career development opportunities
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field
2+ years of experience managing embedded software projects
Proficiency in embedded C programming
Experience using embedded real-time operating systems
Ability to work in a small, growing company without established processes and the ability to deal with ambiguity and create structure where needed
Experience managing software repositories, code reviews and releases, and strategies involving code reuse to improve maintainability and scalability across projects
Comfortable understanding electrical PCBA schematics
Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage both projects and people effectively
Preferred Qualifications (roughly in order of priority):
3+ years of managing a software engineering team
8+ years of experience developing embedding software engineering solutions
Experience implementing or integrating application code on PLCs or mobile equipment controllers, particularly systems with CANopen or J1939 interfaces
Experience developing embedded devices that operate on a CAN bus with either J1939 or CANopen communication protocols
Experience generating customer facing technical documentation
Experience with Python, C#, Rust, or similar for developing basic Windows utilities
Experience with different project management methodologies, such as Agile, Waterfall, etc, and their related tools
