Operating Room Assistant IOperating Room Assistant (ORA) works under the direct supervision of the Nursing Director. The ORA is responsible for transporting patients, cleaning Operating Rooms, maintaining a clean environment, moving equipment, delivery of specimens, second scrubbing PRN, and other duties as assigned. The ORA functions as a member of the Perioperative Nursing Team who has specific knowledge, skills and training to work in an Operating Room Environment.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Promotes a philosophy of patient/family focused care through cordial greeting and interactions with patient, families and hospital personnelProvides hospital/unit orientation information for guest, patients and familiesDemonstrates an awareness of hospital systems and procedures, location of all departments, procedure areas and other patient services. Refers patients, families and others to appropriate resourcesIndependently transports and assists in the transfer of patients of all age group, adolescence through geriatricProperly identifies patients utilizing 2 approved identifiersEnsures safety and support measures in patient transfer (i.e. bedrails raised, patient covered with blanket and warm)Is aware of special precautions in transferring patients with precautionsIs aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting of heavy objectsParticipates in limb holding for skin preparationClean Rooms and all clinical areas within Day Surgery UnitRemove suction containers and equipment, laundry bags, trash bagsWash furniture and make up O.R. bedsClean off blood from surfaces (i.e. walls, equipment, etc.)Clean floorsExchanges full biohazardous needle / medication waste / chemotherapy / sealed sources of radiation and radioisotopes.)Anticipates and is attentive to progress of O.R. schedule, has supplies ready for immediate use in order to meet tight deadlines of following casesKeep the corridors clean and free of trash and debrisAssist in retrieval, moving, set-up and return of specialized equipment and instrumentationDelivery of specimens to labsCollect and log specimens from refrigeratorsEnsures proper handoff of products to OR staffCreates stock lists, obtain and stock O.R. scrub sink, set-up rooms, and workstations (e.g. face masks, soap, paper work, etc.)Distribute linenQUALIFICATIONS:High school graduate or equivalentAble to read, understand and write EnglishSuccessful completion of Hospital OrientationSuccessful completion of Departmental Orientation and TrainingSKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:Must be able to lift 40lbs. IndependentlyMust be able to push stretcher independently with patient weighing up to 250lbsMust be able to comprehend written directions for mixing cleaning supplies and ordering suppliesMust be aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting of heavy objectsMust possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with other health care membersMust constantly be alert and attentive to progress of O.R. schedule to meet tight deadlines of following cases
