Power System Engineer – Microgrid & Data Center

As an energy-saving solutions provider with core competencies in power electronics and automation, Delta's business categories include Power Electronics, Mobility, Automation, and Infrastructure.Key ResponsibilitiesThe Power System Engineer – Microgrid & Data Center Applications is responsible for the design, analysis, and validation of electrical power systems supporting mission-critical data center microgrids. This role focuses on ensuring reliability, resilience, scalability, and grid compatibility for systems serving high-density, fast-ramping loads, including AI and hyperscale data centers.The position bridges power system design, modeling, interconnection, and operational requirements, working closely with control, protection, commissioning, and customer teams to deliver robust, repeatable microgrid solutions tailored for data center environments.Main AccountabilitiesDesign and validate data-center-grade microgrid power architectures.Ensure system performance under fast load transients, partial failures, and islanded operation.Own power system studies supporting interconnection, reliability, and compliance.Define and enforce electrical design standards for scalable microgrid deployments.Support integration of BESS, generation, UPS, and utility interfaces.Reduce deployment and operational risk through early technical rigor and validation.Serve as a technical counterpart to customers, utilities, and internal stakeholders.Key Activities and ResponsibilitiesDevelop and review:System one-line diagramsPower distribution architectures (MV/LV)Redundancy and topology concepts (N, N+1, 2N, 2N+1)Define system operating modes including:Grid-connected, islanded, and transition statesBlack start and load restoration strategiesCoordinate integration of:Utility feedsBESS and inverter-based resourcesDiesel or gas generationUPS and rack-level power systemsMinimum QualificationsSoft Skills & Behavioral CompetenciesPerform and review studies including:Load flow and voltage regulationShort-circuit and equipment dutyTransient and dynamic performance (in coordination with stability engineers)Protection coordinationAnalyze system response to:Fast load ramps (e.g., AI workload swings)Loss of major equipment or feedersMode transitions between grid and islanded operationEnsure study assumptions align with:Control strategiesEquipment ratingsCustomer reliability requirementsCoordinate power interfaces between:Utility and microgrid POIMV distributionUPS and downstream load filteringUnderstand and leverage load filtering provided by:UPS systemsRack-level power electronicsDefine clear boundaries between load-side dynamics and grid-facing systems.Support utility interconnection processes by:Preparing technical study inputsReviewing interconnection study resultsEnsuring IEEE 1547 and utility complianceCoordinate system settings and documentation required for approval.Act as a technical interface during utility and reviews.Develop and maintain:Design assumptions and calculation recordsEngineering reports and technical summariesSystems thinker – able to balance control performance, hardware limits, grid requirements, and operational constraints.Structured problem solver – approaches complex technical problems methodically and transparently.Technical communicator – can clearly explain control concepts to non-controls experts, customers, and leadership.Collaborative mindset – works effectively across disciplines and organizationalboundaries.Ownership & accountability – takes responsibility for technical outcomes from concept through deployment.Adaptability – comfortable working in evolving architectures and handling ambiguous requirements.Attention to detail – maintains rigor in documentation, testing, and validation.Preferred QualificationsExperience with microgrid controllers, EMS, or plant-level supervisory controls.Exposure to utility interconnection processes and grid code compliance.Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering or related field.
