Position Summary
The Dishwasher is responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and properly storing all dishes, utensils, cookware, and kitchen equipment to ensure safe and hygienic meal service for residents. This position supports the dietary and kitchen staff in maintaining a clean, sanitary kitchen environment consistent with state and federal food safety regulations and assisted living standards.
Primary Responsibilities
Kitchen and Dish Room Operations
Operate commercial dishwashing machines and three-compartment sinks according to manufacturer specifications and facility protocols
Wash, rinse, and sanitize all dishes, glassware, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment
Inspect cleaned items for spots, residue, or damage; reprocess as needed to meet quality standards
Load and unload dishwashing equipment efficiently to maximize throughput during meal service periods
Sanitation and Food Safety
Maintain infection control standards by properly handling soiled dishes and items from resident dining areas
Follow all food safety protocols, including proper water temperature, chemical sanitizer concentration, and contact times
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, aprons, and closed-toe shoes
Clean and sanitize the dish room, kitchen work surfaces, floors, and storage areas on a scheduled basis
Properly dispose of food waste and trash in designated containers
Organization and Storage
Organize and store clean, sanitized items in designated areas by type and frequency of use
Rotate stock using FIFO (First In, First Out) method to prevent spoilage
Maintain inventory of dishwashing supplies (detergent, sanitizer, etc.) and report shortages to kitchen supervisor
Handle all equipment and items with care to prevent breakage, damage, or injury
Kitchen Support
Assist with basic food preparation tasks as directed by the cook or chef (e.g., moving food carts, sorting and washing vegetables)
Help set up and break down dining areas and meal service stations under supervision
Transport dishes, utensils, and serving items between kitchen and dining areas using appropriate carts
Respond promptly to requests for additional dish runs or kitchen supplies during meal service
General Duties
Maintain a clean personal appearance and uniform standards
Follow all facility policies, procedures, and safety protocols
Report equipment malfunctions, supply shortages, or maintenance issues to supervisor immediately
Communicate effectively with kitchen and dietary staff to support smooth meal service operations
Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Prior dishwashing, food service, or kitchen experience in a healthcare, assisted living, restaurant, or institutional setting preferred
Ability to learn quickly; on-the-job training provided for candidates without prior experience
Knowledge and Skills
Understanding of basic food safety and sanitation principles
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards
Ability to work efficiently and meet production schedules during busy meal periods
Basic math skills for measuring cleaning chemicals and supplies
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods (6–8 hours per shift)
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly; up to 25 pounds frequently
Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and move about work area freely
Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for safe equipment operation
Ability to tolerate exposure to heat, steam, humidity, and cleaning chemical odors
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Respectful and professional demeanor with residents, families, and all staff members
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a kitchen and dietary team
Willingness to take direction and adapt to changing priorities
Reliability and punctuality; consistent attendance essential for meal service operations
