Employees performa variety of mechanical and building trade tasks. Although performanceof skilled work is required in many of the repairs made, skills requiredin any one type of trade are usually less than would be required of ajourneyman in that field. Work differs between positions, but primaryemphasis is upon mechanical ability and skills as applied to adepartment\'s maintenance activities. Work is performed independently,but frequently is inspected upon completion.\*\*Employees within the department of division shall be given firstconsideration\*\***\*\*\*Posting may close at any time\*\*\*****Examples of Work Performed** Specific duties depend on the actual work location and activities. Inspects buildings, machinery and/or equipment to locate need forrepair or maintenance work. Makes building repairs, cuts and replaces glass; installs doors;patches cement walks, floors and foundations; patches and lays tile;and makes and installs shelves, partitions and other wooden parts. Repairs wiring, switches, fixtures and motors. Installs, services, and repairs heating plants and/or repair varioustypes of small stationary or portable mechanical equipment. Water Distribution: Ensures the fire hydrant branch valves are clearly identifiableand operational. Raises fire hydrants to grade as needed. Troubleshoots and rebuilds various types of fire hydrants. May supervise helpers or relieve a supervisor of a crew. Completion of work assignments will require the operation of avehicle. These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other relatedduties may be assigned as needed.\**Requirements of Work** Specific requirements depend on the actual work location andactivities. Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, parts and materials usedin mechanical, building and/or fire hydrant maintenance and repairwork Working knowledge of building construction and building equipmentoperation Knowledge of work hazards and ability to take necessary safetyprecautions Ability to read and interpret technical repair manuals Ability to effectively use small precision tools for close tolerancework Ability to climb stairs and ladders and to bend, twist, and reach asnecessary to repair equipment Ability to tolerate exposure to chemicals and fluids commonly usedin building and equipment maintenance and repair and airborneenvironmental nuisances associated with machine exhaust and opengrounds Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds; to lift and carry up to300 pounds with the assistance of another person Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools thattighten, loosen, or cut Ability to shovel snow and lift the load up to four feet high Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships withassociates Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and inwriting Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and recordinformation Ability to read and interpret water distribution maps Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class B commercialdriver\'s license (CDL) with an air brake endorsement.
