Position Summary The Bindery Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining bindery and finishing equipment to complete printed products according to job specifications, quality standards, and production schedules. This position plays a key role in ensuring jobs are finished accurately, safely, and on time. Key Responsibilities Equipment Operation Set up and operate bindery equipment including cutters, folders, saddle stitchers, perfect binders, collators, drills, padding machines, shrink-wrappers, inserters, and mailing equipment. Perform make-ready, adjustments, and changeovers according to job tickets. Verify job specifications including trim size, fold type, binding method, and quantity. Monitor production during runs to ensure consistent quality. Quality Control Perform first-piece inspections and in-process quality checks. Ensure finished products meet customer requirements for trim, registration, folds, binding strength, and inserts. Identify and report defects or discrepancies immediately. Reduce waste, spoilage, and rework through attention to detail. Safety & Housekeeping Follow all safety procedures including machine guarding and lockout/tagout. Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas (5S standards). Report unsafe conditions or equipment issues to the supervisor. Maintenance & Troubleshooting Perform routine cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventative maintenance. Troubleshoot minor mechanical issues and make adjustments as needed. Notify supervisor or maintenance of major equipment problems. Team & Workflow Work closely with other bindery operators, pressroom, prepress, mail, and shipping teams. Assist with staging work-in-progress and finished goods. Support cross-training and assist on other equipment as needed. Accurately complete production logs, job tickets, and time reporting. Qualifications Required 1–3 years of bindery or finishing experience in a commercial printing environment (or equivalent manufacturing experience). Ability to read and follow job tickets and written instructions. Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability. Strong attention to detail and quality. Preferred Experience with web press or high-volume commercial print operations. Knowledge of mailing and USPS requirements. Experience operating multiple bindery machines. Familiarity with MIS or production tracking systems. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Frequent bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment. Work Environment Manufacturing floor with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and paper dust. Overtime, weekends, or shift work may be required to meet production deadlines.
