STEM Faculty – Hawken School We are seeking a dynamic, curious, collaborative individual to join the faculty of the Mastery School of Hawken for the 2026-27 school year. At the heart of our model is the idea that you learn while doing—so you'll get coaching and support as you learn how to teach in a very different way at our ungraded, project- and problem-based high school. While experience working with young people is vital, classroom experience is not a necessity and career-changers are welcome!Wildly enthusiastic about mentoring and coaching adolescentsExperienced in creative problem-solving and building things in the real worldSkilled communicator and listener who enjoys working in a highly collaborative environmentIntellectually curious, self-directed and motivated learner with a wide range of interests and skills, academic and otherwiseCommitted to active, ongoing development of intercultural competencePhilosophically aligned with the mission of the Mastery School of Hawken and believes in Hawken's purpose, promise and principlesAble to operate in ambiguity and roll up your sleeves and jump in to do what the team needsSignificant depth of expertise and professional experience in one or more of the following areas:BiologyChemistryComputer Science, Computational Thinking, and/or CodingEngineering and/or PhysicsMathematicsAs part of Hawken's One High School model, this position may include time on both:The Upper School campus in Gates Mills, situated on over 300 acres with wooded trails, open spaces, and a blend of modern and historic buildingsThe Mastery School of Hawken in University Circle, located near Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, and world-class arts and cultural institutionsAs you onboard with our dynamic teams and learn our methods and approaches, you'll take increasing responsibility for program elements over your first and second years. You'll also bring your unique set of strengths to all aspects of school life, in the classroom, in our Wayfinding program, and in co-curriculars.Within one month, you'll:Learn how our model of teaching and learning works by participating in on-demand training through the Korda Institute for TeachingParticipate in an all-school onboarding experience designed to connect you to colleagues across Hawken and our cityEngage in ongoing onboarding experiencesWithin three months, you'll:Design and teach learning experiences in our Macros and MicrosBuild initial connections with key community partnersTake leadership of one or more co-curricular offerings for studentsGain hands-on training to support your work in counseling and advising studentsCollaborate closely with colleagues on all aspects of program implementation, jumping in to help as neededEngage in collaborative faculty meetings designed to be responsive to what you'll experience in your first few monthsWithin the first year, you'll:Engage and reflect with colleagues on an ongoing basis about your learning, growth, and developmentRefine your instructional practice with ongoing coaching from the Korda Institute for Teaching, the Director of the Mastery School, and collaboration with peersTeach or co-teach a three-week Intensive in a topic area of interest for Hawken high school studentsRevise and refine your plans for future learning experiences (Intensives, Macros, Micros)Within the second year, you'll:Independently design and lead learning experiences (Intensives, Macros, Micros)Hawken School is a preschool-12 co-ed independent day school with four campuses in Cleveland, Ohio and founder of the Mastery Transcript Consortium, a national organization aimed at reinventing how students prepare for college, careers, and life. In August 2020, we launched the Mastery School of Hawken, a new project- and problem-based ungraded high school in the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland.We designed the The Mastery School of Hawken around three core principles:Learning experiences are organized around real-world problem-solving, where students learn while working on challenges with community partners.We use new methods of teaching designed around individual growth, allowing for more project-based and personalized learning.Our mastery assessment model emphasizes feedback for growth and credits enduring, deep, and transferable learning using mastery credits.As Hawken continues to advance its vision of One High School, bringing together the Upper School and the Mastery School into a more coherent and connected student experience, we are seeking educators who are excited to teach, collaborate, and innovate across this evolving model, with the passion, commitment and ability to help each of our students learn deeply and feel seen, heard and valued.This position will require training in summer 2026 with a full time start in August 2026.Hawken School is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to promoting all forms of diversity in the workplace and in our student body.
