Assistant Controller
Job Location: This position must be onsite at either our Harlan or Council Bluffs, Iowa locations.
Job Purpose:
Under general supervision, and in compliance with established policies and procedures, the Assistant Controller supports daily accounting operations, ensures accuracy of financial data, and maintains strong internal controls. This role assists with financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and monthend close processes while upholding organizational standards. The Assistant Controller will perform assigned duties in accordance to Midstates Bank's Core Values and will adhere to the Quality Service Standards.
Essential Functions:
AccountingInternal Controls
Perform daily reconciliations of deposit accounts, lending activity, and general ledger items.
Review general ledger activity and resolve discrepancies.
Monitor correspondent bank positions and manage funds transactions as needed.
Review and approve accounts payable allocations; assist with annual information reporting.
Review payroll documentation, approve processing, assist with payroll tax reconciliations, and support yearend payroll reporting.
Review securities reconciliations and related accounting entries.
Reconcile accruals, prepaids, and other general ledger accounts.
Prepare periodic market value adjustments and related support.
Reconcile interest expense and prepare supporting reports.
MonthEnd Close
Complete the monthend close process, including balance sheet review and income statement preparation.
Prepare tax accrual entries and verify accuracy of posted financial results.
Prepare equityrelated entries for affiliated entities.
Support updates to regulatory and internal reporting worksheets.
TaxRegulatory Compliance
Review sales tax and withholding reconciliations and approve required submissions.
Maintain depreciation schedules and fixed asset records.
Assist with regulatory filings, deposit summaries, and periodic government reporting.
Asset/Liability Management
Update profitability models and perform related reconciliations.
BudgetingFinancial Support
Support annual budgeting processes and upload finalized budgets.
Assist with schedules and supporting documentation for annual tax workpapers.
Assist with preparation of monthly financial statements for related entities.
Skills/Qualifications:
Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality
Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general accounting software
Working knowledge of payroll tax requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
Experience: Prior accounting experience strongly preferred.
