PostgreSQL Data Architect
We are looking for a hands-on PostgreSQL Database Architect to design, build, and optimize highly available, secure, and scalable PostgreSQL platforms. You will define database architecture standards, lead migrations and modernization work, and partner with application, DevOps, and security teams to make sure data platforms perform and meet business requirements.
*Key Responsibilities*
- Design and own PostgreSQL architecture for transactional and analytical workloads, including schema design, partitioning, indexing, and data modeling
- Build high-availability and disaster recovery solutions (streaming and logical replication, failover, backup and PITR)
- Tune performance by analyzing query plans, tuning configuration, and managing vacuum, bloat, and connection pooling
- Lead migrations from Oracle, SQL Server, or MySQL to PostgreSQL, and upgrades between major versions with minimal downtime
- Define database security standards: role-based access, encryption in transit and at rest, auditing, and compliance controls
- Automate provisioning, patching, and deployments with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines
- Monitor databases with proactive alerting and capacity planning, and lead root-cause analysis for production incidents
- Set best practices, review designs and code, and mentor DBAs and developers
- Document architecture, runbooks, and standards
*Required Qualifications*
- 15+ years in database engineering or administration, with 5 years of hands-on PostgreSQL architecture experience
- Strong PostgreSQL internals knowledge: MVCC, WAL, query planner, indexing types (B-tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN), partitioning
- Experience with HA/DR tools such as Patroni, repmgr, pgBackRest, or Barman
- Strong SQL and PL/pgSQL, plus scripting in Python or Bash
- Experience running PostgreSQL on cloud platforms (AWS RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or GCP Cloud SQL)
- Experience with performance tools (pg_stat_statements, EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pgBadger)
- Proven migration experience from another database platform to PostgreSQL
*Preferred Qualifications*
- Experience with PgBouncer, Pgpool-II, or similar connection pooling
- Experience with Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, or Docker
- Familiarity with extensions such as PostGIS, TimescaleDB, Citus, and pg_partman
- Experience with CDC and data integration (Debezium, Kafka, logical decoding)
- Knowledge of compliance frameworks (SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS)
- Cloud or PostgreSQL certifications (AWS Database Specialty, EDB, or similar)
*Soft Skills*
- Clear communicator who can explain architecture trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Comfortable owning production systems and working with on-call teams
