Principal Systems Engineer – Quantum Computing Systems
Overview
In this leadership role, you bridge engineering execution with quantum machine milestones to make the system coherent, buildable, and integrable. You partner closely with scientists to extract tacit knowledge, translate it into actionable architecture and requirements, and drive disciplined, scalable development in a fast-moving R&D environment. You enable cross-functional teams to move faster while maintaining focus on machine progress and reliability. This role offers broad influence across teams and a mission to turn scientific breakthroughs into reliable quantum computers.
ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with quantum scientists to understand real-world machine operation, tuning, and debugging in the labEvolve system requirements alongside experimental progress, documenting uncertainties and open questionsCreate and maintain a living system architecture covering hardware, control electronics/firmware, and software orchestrationLead trade studies and technical decisions to align architecture with machine milestonesDefine and drive a system integration and test strategy that reflects evolving hardwareImprove pre-deployment testing and reduce lab burden by aligning testbeds with machine configurationsDeliver early, tangible improvements to reduce friction for scientists and engineersIdentify non-applicable traditional SE assumptions and introduce targeted process design to fit quantum R&DMentor engineers and scale system knowledge through documentation and internal educationProvide leadership input on technical strategy, risk, and execution timing
