Kellogg School, Cornwall Consolidated School, Kent Center School, North Canaan Elementary School, Salisbury Central School, Sharon Center School, and Housatonic Valley Regional High School Hourly Rate of Pay: $36.00Overview: In collaboration with school staff and under the guidance of the building principal and Director of Pupil Services, the Substitute School Nurse provides essential healthcare services to support the immediate health and safety needs of students and staff. The substitute nurse ensures continuity of care by addressing daily health concerns, administering medications and treatments as prescribed, and responding to health-related emergencies. This role requires adherence to state laws, local board policies, and school procedures related to health services. While serving in this temporary capacity, the substitute nurse acts as a health advocate for students, promoting a safe and supportive school environment during the regular nurse's absence.Qualifications/Certification RequirementsFor RNs: Hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license from the Connecticut State Department of Public Health. Have at least one year of nursing experience within the past five years, preferably in pediatric, adolescent, community, or public health nursing. Have completed 12 academic credits, CEUs, or equivalent workshop hours beyond basic nursing preparation. For LPNs: Hold a valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license from the Connecticut State Department of Public Health. Work under the direction of a Registered Nurse, with RN supervision immediately available (on-site, nearby, or by phone). All Candidates Must: Hold a current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification. Demonstrate excellent communication, organization, and emergency response skills.Responsibilities of the Substitute School NurseProvides school nursing services in alignment with state laws, district policies, and standing orders. Administers first aid and emergency care in accordance with standing orders. Collects and documents relevant health information presented during the assignment, including immunization and medication records as needed. Maintains a daily record of health office visits, treatments, and care provided. Documents medical incidents, injuries, and accidents occurring at school and notifies appropriate personnel. Stores and administers medications according to state requirements and board policy. Communicates with the principal and/or school medical advisor regarding urgent or significant health concerns. Maintains current emergency plans, information, and forms for students as needed during the assignment. Supports the health and safety of the school environment by serving as a resource to staff and students. Performs other related duties as directed by the principal, school medical advisor, or Director of Pupil Services.Working Conditions: Location: Regional School District No. 1 is located in rural Northwest Connecticut and consists of six elementary schools and one regional high school (grades 9-12). Work Schedule: This is an at-will, on-call position. Substitute nurses are contacted and scheduled as needed to provide coverage for school health services.
