Fire Inspector/Investigator
Job Summary
The Pike Township Fire Department is seeking a qualified Fire Inspector / Investigator to perform fire investigations, fire and life safety inspections, and public education programs to ensure compliance with Indiana fire and building safety laws.
Reports to: Fire Marshall
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Fire Investigations
Conduct fire scene examinations in accordance with department policy and nationally recognized standards to determine origin and cause.
Work in adverse and potentially hazardous environments, including unstable structures and extreme weather conditions.
Operate department photography equipment, conduct interviews, prepare diagrams/sketches, and complete detailed investigative reports.
Fire and Life Safety Inspections
Conduct inspections of educational, industrial, residential, commercial, institutional, assembly, and hazardous occupancies.
Review construction plans for compliance with applicable fire and building codes.
Verify compliance related to:
Means of egress
Fire alarm, sprinkler, standpipe, hydrant, and suppression systems
Emergency preparedness and evacuation procedures
Hazardous materials storage
Fire department access
Occupancy and construction classifications
Occupant load calculations
Fire and Life Safety Education
Develop and deliver fire prevention and life safety programs to:
Schools, daycares, and senior facilities
Local businesses and community groups
Assist businesses with evacuation planning and fire safety education.
Administrative and Recordkeeping
Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, investigations, and activities.
Submit periodic reports to the Fire Marshal.
Assist with department planning, proposals, and budget needs.
Minimum Qualifications
At least 21 years of age at time of hire
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Indiana Driver’s License
No felony convictions
Minimum two (2) years of experience in one or more of the following:
Fire inspection or investigation
Fire suppression
Fire and life safety education
Code enforcement
Plans review
Law enforcement
Certifications (must possess at least one of the following on date of hire and have the ability to obtain the rest within required timeframe):
Fire Inspector I/II (IFSAC, ProBoard, or ICC) or Indiana reciprocity (within 1 year)
Fire Investigator certification (IFSAC, ProBoard, NAFI-CFEI, or IAAI-CFI) (within 1 year)
Fire Investigation Technician (IAAI-FIT) or equivalent (within 1 year)
Ability to obtain and maintain sworn Indiana law enforcement officer status (within 3 years)
Additional Requirements
Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond promptly to fire scenes
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Windows OS
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, wear PPE exceeding 20 lbs, and perform physical tasks including climbing and bending
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field with two (2) years of fire service or law enforcement experience
Associate’s degree in Fire Science with four (4) years of experience
Indiana State Fire Inspector I certification
Indiana State Fire Investigator, NAFI-CFEI, or IAAI-CFI certification
Pay: $63,405.00 - $76,275.00 per year
