Take the first step in the right direction—are you READY?Position SummaryPerforms skilled electrical repairs and troubleshooting / maintenance of electrical equipment and facilities at all Port Houston locations.Key Responsibilities/DutiesDiagnose problems or recurring malfunctions; choose the course of action and repair or troubleshoot techniques to diagnose problemsProvide inventory control for stock level of repair partsMaintain routine records related to work performed and materialDiagnose electrical or mechanical problems by the use of appropriate equipment and tools such as voltmeters and other tools common to the tradeEnsure safety and environmental procedures are exercised during the performance of daily activitiesInstall electrical controls and circuits for a variety of electrical equipment such as lighting systems, motors, and control cabinetsMake modifications to existing or add-on facilities by installing computer cables and terminals, lighting, and lighting controls, convenience outlets and other electrical equipmentMaintain area lighting for parking lots, wharves, transit sheds; perform routine maintenance on electrical substations; maintain cables, antennas, clearance lights and cathodic protection systemTroubleshoot electrical malfunctions and repairs or replaces worn, defective or damaged equipment, using appropriate equipment and tools such as multi meters, conduit benders and other tools common to the trade; interpret blueprints, sketches and drawings in installing and troubleshooting electrical equipmentEstimate and obtain supplies needed for electrical work assignmentsWork required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hoursWork a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisorAct in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you)Perform other duties as required Education/ExperienceHigh School diploma or GED equivalent required4+ years electrician experience requiredElectrician Journeyman License preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And BehaviorsKnowledge of relevant electrical codes such as the National Electrical codeKnowledge of basic electronic troubleshooting and repairsKnowledge of control circuits, DC and AC motor maintenance, and power distributionKnowledge of electrical controls and circuits installed on Port Houston equipmentAmple knowledge of electricity, electrical systems and equipmentKnowledge of safety precautions necessary to deal with occupational hazardsGeneral working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel)Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to obtain State of Texas Electrician’s licenseKnowledge of programmable logic controller and variable frequency driveKnowledge of medium and high voltage switch gear is desiredJudgment and quick-thinking skillsAbility to work with written or oral directionsAbility to climb and be comfortable at heightsAbility to operate forklift, if neededA current, valid Texas driver's license is requiredA Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employmentKey Competencies RequiredAchieving ResultsAttention to DetailEffective CommunicationPlanning and OrganizingSafetyWork EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
