Associate Principal Product Manager - Genomics Workflow Orchestration Platform
What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity? At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients.Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.About The RoleClinical genomics labs today run multiple disconnected applications, creating manual handoffs, transcription errors, and significant integration overhead per site. The future of this space is a unified orchestration layer that connects every step from sample intake to clinical insight, powered by intelligent automation and AI. We’re building that future. As an Associate Principal Product Manager on the Orchestration team, you’ll own the vision and execution of our workflow orchestration platform. You’ll define the capabilities, core concepts, and user experiences that tie together instruments, software systems, and data across the lab and drive adoption from early validation through broad market impact. This is a multi-year, career-defining opportunity to shape how genomics labs operate. It’s not a feature role: it’s a platform leadership role with the scope to define a new category. This is a role for a modern SaaS platform PM who thrives in ambiguity, thinks in systems, and raises the bar for clarity, design quality, and execution. You are also AI-forward in how you work: you use AI daily to research, validate assumptions, prototype ideas, draft narratives, and vibe-code functional proofs of concept. You see AI not as a novelty but as a core part of your operating model as a product manager. The TeamYou’ll join a team of PMs focused on the orchestration portfolio, reporting to the Director of Product Management. You’ll work closely with engineering, design, and data science partners dedicated to this platform, as well as adjacent product teams across workflow automation, on-prem orchestration, LIMS, and lab automation partnerships. This is a team that takes product craft seriously, embraces AI to work smarter, and believes the best ideas win regardless of where they come from. What You’ll DoOwn the orchestration platform vision and roadmapDefine the long-term product strategy for how labs move from fragmented tools to unified orchestrationPrioritize across dry-lab orchestration, wet-lab automation integration, and high-volume lab scalingTranslate complex domain problems into clear product direction that engineering and design can execute againstDefine and validate a pricing and packaging model that aligns platform value with customer outcomesShape the intelligent orchestration layerDefine intelligent workflow automation that adapts based on conditions, context, and user intentDrive AI-assisted decisioning: optimized batching, predictive QC, anomaly detection, and run-time recommendationsDesign platform primitives that allow teams to build capabilities consistently and safelyDefine APIs and integration contracts that internal teams and external partners build on confidentlyEnsure auditability, traceability, and compliance-ready AI behavior is embedded from day oneYou won’t own every surface, but you’ll be a key voice pushing the platform toward a modern, intelligent architecture.Champion product excellence and customer empathyWork with Design to create intuitive workflows that feel human-centered, not machine-centeredDrive clarity and simplicity into complex orchestration surfacesObsess over the details: interaction flows, observability, error handling, and user trust signalsLead cross-functional strategyInfluence long-term architecture across engineering, data science, UX, quality, and scientific stakeholdersCoordinate with adjacent product teams on integration contracts and cross-product dependenciesCreate crisp narratives that bring order to complex technical choicesMentor PMs in systems thinking, customer empathy, and AI-enabled product developmentYou’ll be one of the people others seek out when they want to understand the bigger picture. What Success Looks LikeWithin Your First Year, You Will HaveDefined a compelling platform vision and roadmap that earns buy-in across engineering, design, and leadershipShipped orchestration capabilities validated through customer engagementEnabled AI-powered workflow features that measurably reduce user effort and manual stepsEstablished platform primitives adopted across multiple productsDemonstrated AI-forward working practices that accelerate the team’s ability to research, prototype, and validateRaised the bar on product execution through better mechanisms, documentation, and cross-team clarityWhat You BringRequiredTypically requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8 years of experience; or equivalent experience.Strong experience w/ SaaS products, platforms, or automation systemsExperience shipping a product from 0→1 or early stage through market validationExperience with workflow engines, orchestration frameworks, or cloud platform architectureDeep comfort with ambiguity and complex systemsA tasteful product sense with a strong POV on UX, information architecture, and simplicityExceptional communication and narrative writingDemonstrated success leading multi-team efforts and influencing architectureDemonstrated fluency with AI tools in your product management practice: you use AI for research, competitive analysis, prototyping, narrative drafting, dataexploration, or vibe-coding functional proofs of concept. You don’t just talk about AI, you ship with itPreferredTrack record of building platform products that other teams build on top of (internal platforms, developer ecosystems, integration layers)Experience defining new categories or creating markets where none existed beforeExperience with outcome-based, usage-based, or value-aligned pricing modelsComfort operating in regulated, compliance-sensitive, or safety-critical environments (any industry)Familiarity with ML and AI patterns (model lifecycle, inference, data quality) beyond using AI toolsDomain experience in life sciences, diagnostics, lab automation, or scientific workflows is a plus but not required. We value product builders who can learn a domain fast over domain experts learning to build productWhy Join UsYou’ll define the orchestration layer that connects the entire genomics workflow and infuse it with AI from the ground up. Software orchestration is the next growth lever for the industry, and this role puts you at the center of that shift. This isn’t incremental feature work on a mature product.
