What started inthe early 1990s as a local project to retrain displaced loggers and mill workers in Trinity County, CA is now a vibrantnonprofit organization working locally, statewide and nationally on landscape conservation and communitydevelopment.In addition to putting dozens of our community members back to work in the woods each year, WRTC leads forest andwatershed conservation programs, coordinates state biomass and fire management partnerships, and contributes tostate and federal policy-making and program development.Job SummaryThe Archaeological Technician supports field-based cultural resource work, including archaeological survey, datacollection, and documentation. This position works under the direct supervision of an Archaeology Specialist and/orCrew Lead to complete field surveys, site testing, and data management tasks.Work includes both office and field responsibilities, with significant time spent hiking in steep, rugged terrain andworking in variable conditions, including heat, smoke, and inclement weather.Job Duties and Core Responsibilities● Conduct archaeological field surveys by walking landscapes and identifying sites, features, and artifacts● Collect and compile data to support cultural resource management reporting● Record detailed field observations and enter data for DPR forms, including artifacts, features, and site information● Maintain field data, forms, maps, and files, and care for field equipment and supplies● Conduct routine archaeological testing and monitoring using standard field methods● Use archaeological tools and techniques to document sites and collect data● Communicate regularly and effectively with the Archaeology Specialist and Archaeology Division Director● Interact professionally and positively with landowners, partners, and coworkersRequired Skills and Competencies● Ability to conduct site testing using shovel test excavations and to screen materials for artifacts● Ability to conduct basic historical research● Proficiency with computers, including the ability to enter data and write brief technical reports summarizing fieldwork findings● Operate handheld GPS units and mapping applications (e.g., Garmin, Field Maps, Avenza)● Will occasionally need to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds● Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for conducting fieldwork● Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4WD vehicles● Must be able to navigate steep, rugged terrainPreferred Qualifications and Competencies● Archaeological experience and/or education preferred (completion of at least two years of study toward a bachelor'sdegree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related field is desirable)● Knowledge of prehistoric and historic cultures of Northern California● Experience conducting archaeological testing and monitoringCompensation and BenefitsThis is a seasonal, hourly (non-exempt) position.Wages: $21.75-$23.75 per hour, depending on experience and educationBenefits for eligible employees include:● Paid time off● Paid holidays● Employer-paid vision and dental insurance (after waiting period)● Employer contribution of $100/month towards a medical plan (after waiting period)● 403(b) retirement planAdditional InformationThis is a seasonal position for the 2026 field season, with the potential to extend based on workload and additionalproject opportunities.The anticipated schedule is four 10-hour days per week (Monday–Thursday), depending on field and office needs.
