Job Title: Teacher - Middle School TheatreReports to: PrincipalReceives Guidance From: Principal, Lead Teacher, AdministratorOvertime Status: Compliant with position, salary, and FLSA regulationsJob PurposeA Middle School Theatre Teacher in the Lamar County School District is expected to provide engaging, standards-based instruction in theatre arts while helping students develop creativity, collaboration, communication, and performance skills. This role fosters student growth through acting, technical theatre, and production experiences that contribute to their development as confident, responsible, and expressive individuals. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.Duties And ResponsibilitiesMeet and instruct assigned theatre classes at designated times and locationsDevelop and implement a theatre arts curriculum aligned with Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Fine ArtsPlan lessons that include acting, movement, voice, improvisation, script analysis, and technical theatre (set, lighting, sound, costumes as appropriate)Design a program of study that meets the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of middle school studentsCreate opportunities for student performance, including classroom showcases, school productions, or community performancesDirect and supervise student rehearsals and productions, including after-school responsibilities as requiredPromote student confidence, creativity, and collaboration through performance-based learningProvide multiple pathways for students to demonstrate understanding, including performance, design, and written reflectionMaintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom and performance environmentManage theatre space(s), equipment, costumes, props, and materials responsiblyIntegrate cross-curricular connections where appropriate (e.g., literacy, history, communication skills)Assess student progress regularly using performance-based and formative assessments; provide timely feedbackEncourage students to take ownership of their learning and artistic growthEstablish and maintain effective communication with families regarding student progress and performance eventsPrepare lesson plans and maintain documentation of instruction as required by administrationSupport school programs, events, and initiatives through theatre and performance when appropriateCollaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary learning and school cultureAttend and participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school committeesMaintain accurate records in compliance with district, state, and federal requirementsUphold student safety during rehearsals, performances, and use of theatre equipmentAssist in implementing district policies related to student conduct and classroom managementMaintain confidentiality and professionalism at all timesDemonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance, including extended hours for performances when requiredMaintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable useUndergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy proceduresMaintain confidentialityPerform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy, state, or federal guidelinesRead, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, all other district policies and applicable procedures and protocols as established by LCSD, and Mississippi Educator Code of ConductQualificationsEducation Level: Bachelor's degree in Education or higherCertification: Hold an appropriate Mississippi Teaching Credential or valid emergency certification issued by the state of Mississippi Educational Board123 - Drama (K-12) Performing Arts endorsementOther Requirements: Required references and background checkPhysical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
