Greenhouse Manager, Lyman Estate

Historic New England (HNE) seeks a full-time greenhouse manager responsible for operations and public activities at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, MA. This picturesque historic site is one of the oldest greenhouses in the country, welcoming visitors and shoppers for a unique experience throughout the year. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Provide expert plant advice and excellent customer service to visitors through plant sales and public programs.Oversee care and maintenance of the historic site including repair of greenhouse structures and their mechanical systems.Care for historic and sales plant collections including orchids, exotic house plants, citrus fruits, camellias, and herbs.Monitor, fertilize, prune, repot, groom and stage, and manage pest control.Develop annual work plan, site budget, and generate regular reports.Meet or exceed attendance and revenue goals through plant sales, membership sales, public programs, and group tours.Grow plant material and order plants and supplies that are creatively displayed for special and daily sales.Collaborate with marketing on promotion of the greenhouses.Hire, train, and supervise greenhouse assistant manager, greenhouse assistants, and volunteers.Some evening and weekend work, and on-call emergency response required. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor&#39;s degree in a relevant field with a minimum five years of related employment experience, or equivalent combination of skilled credentialEnthusiasm for public history or public programming preferredCapable of effectively working independently under limited supervisionExperience working for non-profit organizations or managing greenhouse site operationsSkilled experience managing department budgets and tracking revenueSolution oriented problem-solving abilitySupervisory experience and familiarity with team approachAbility to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to set and balance priorities and resource allocationFully competent computer skills, including advanced use of MS Word and Excel spreadsheet functions, databases, internet research, and e-mail managementExcellent communication skills (writing, speaking, presenting, and listening) with the ability to articulate eloquently Historic New England&#39;s mission, aspirations, programs, and pursuit of excellence, which is pervasive throughout the organizationDeep understanding of team approach and objectiveness and respect for diverse perspectives and skillsetsKnowledge of New England culture and historyValid driver&#39;s license and means of transportationStrong belief in, and demonstrated commitment to, Historic New England&#39;s mission and valuesCommitment to the highest standards of professionalism, excellence, and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA)New England residency by start of work required Preferred Qualifications Degree in Plant Science, Botany, HorticultureMaster&#39;s degree Other Duties: Please note this position description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
