Zoo Keeper FT (Small Mammals)

Reid Park Zoo, in Tucson, Arizona seeks a full-time Zoo Keeper to join our team! This position oversees care of a variety of potentially dangerous and non-dangerous animals and habitats.With a mission centered in conservation, the Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and participates in nearly 100 Species Survival Plans for threatened and endangered species. Reid Park Zoo maintains a state-of-the-art elephant program, a cutting-edge veterinary clinic that serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Arizona veterinary program, and is a leader in the songbird and monarch SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) programs to name a few recognitions. Attracting 600,000 guests annually, the Zoo is the midst of an exciting expansion project, Pathway to Asia, that will add four acres to its campus, bringing new species such as red panda, Komodo dragon and Lar gibbon, as well as a breeding facility for critically-endangered Malayan tigers when it opens in 2026.Overview : This position will primarily care for small mammals, including Asian small-clawed otters, red pandas, sand cats, meerkats, Reeve's muntjac, Linnaeus's two-toed sloth, screaming hairy armadillos, tamanduas, goats, ferrets, lesser hedgehog tenrecs, but may also care for birds and larger ungulates within the team. The position will provide high-quality care for the animals in their area as well as assist with habitat and night house maintenance. Animal care includes behavioral observations, positive reinforcement training, preparing and providing enrichment, cleaning, engaging with the welfare committee, and interacting with the supervisory and veterinary teams. The Keeper will be responsible for daily record-keeping; including daily reports, medication logs, welfare tracking, enrichment records, animal training records, and area notes. The Keeper may work in a variety of animal areas and may be a swing or primary keeper of an area. We are committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff by creating an inclusive environment .Reports to: Assistant CuratorResponsibilities:GeneralDemonstrates and models the core values of the Reid Park Zoological Society (RPZS or the Zoo)Perform duties in accordance with RPZS policies and proceduresProvide excellent customer service as a component of all job dutiesFoster and maintain positive, collaborative relationships at all levelsFollows Zoo safety protocols and proceduresAnimal Care Daily cleaning associated with animal night house, habitat, and visitor viewing area.Variable shift work is possible with a couple of night shifts each month.Husbandry care for the animals on the area (feeding, medicating, training, enriching and care specific to the species).Completes reports including but not limited to daily animal reports, enrichment logs, water quality logs, training logs, medication logs, animal incident reports, etc.Develops & implements enrichment activities for animals following AZA guidelines and per department practices and protocols.Trains utilizing positive reinforcement to aid in animal management & promote visitor education.Monitors animal welfare and report concerns to supervisor.Follows all animal care protocols and policies.Assist in the training of new staff and mentoring volunteers.Completes all trainings as required.Be able to perform those tasks that are essential to the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.Communication Participates in formal presentations e.g. Keeper talks, special events, behind-the-scenes tours etc.Answers visitor questions concerning animals, conservation, zoo operations, etc.Participates in AZA groups including SSP and TAGsHealth & Safety Assists in the capture and/ or physical/ chemical restraint & transportation of animals.Participates in emergency drills.Willing to maintain proficiency with darting equipment & firearms if selected for safety team.
