Drafter/Programmer (Sheet Metal Manufacturing)
Description:SMT, Inc., a leading precision sheet metal fabrication and electro-mechanical assembly manufacturer, is seeking a CAD Drafter / Programmer to join our Engineering team. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and enjoys translating concepts into precise, production-ready designs.You will play a key role in supporting product development, improving manufacturing efficiency, and ensuring high-quality output across our operations.Position Summary The CAD Drafter / Programmer is responsible for developing and refining product designs using CAD software, generating flat patterns and programs for fabrication, and supporting production through accurate and efficient design solutions. This position works closely with Engineering, Sales, Estimating, and Production teams to ensure components are designed for manufacturability, quality, and performance.Requirements:Key Responsibilities Collaborate with Sales and Estimating teams to support product design and development initiativesCreate CAD drawings, flat patterns, and CNC programs for laser cutting and fabricationDevelop and model assemblies to verify form, fit, and functionDesign fixtures and jigs to improve manufacturing accuracy and efficiencyTroubleshoot and resolve design or production issues during manufacturingEvaluate existing processes and recommend improvements for efficiency and qualitySupport vendor and component selection, including tooling recommendationsEnsure designs meet customer requirements and applicable industry standardsPerform additional duties as needed to support engineering and production goalsQualifications Education & Experience Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience requiredMinimum 25 years of experience in design, drafting, or process engineering in a manufacturing environment preferredSheet metal fabrication experience strongly preferredTechnical Skills Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)Strong blueprint reading skills, including geometry and trigonometry fundamentalsExperience generating flat patterns and manufacturing programsFamiliarity with sheet metal materials and fabrication processesWorking knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.)Additional Skills Strong problem-solving and analytical abilitiesAbility to work independently and manage multiple prioritiesDetail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and qualityEffective communication and collaboration skillsWork Environment Primarily office-based with regular interaction on the production floorExposure to typical manufacturing conditions including noise, dust, and equipmentOccasional, limited travel may be requiredWhy Join SMT, Inc.?
