Assistant Controller
The Assistant Controller is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Accounting Department, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and continuous process improvement. This role combines hands-on accounting work with leadership and training of accounting staff, with a strong focus on efficiency, collections, driver settlements, and month-end close processes in a fast-paced environment.Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership & ReportingApprove all payments (checks and credit cards)Prepare Journal Entries and maintain JE checklistAssist in Month-End and Year-End closing processes, including preparation of financial statementsPrepare reports for the CFO binderPerform account reconciliationsReview and approve credit memos, ensuring proper backup documentation and handling of credit/rebill transactionsTeam Leadership & DevelopmentSupervise and train Accounting staff in the following areas:Accounts ReceivableAccounts PayableBillingReception / Operations Approval / ScanningReview Driver PayrollReview A/P mail and establish procedures for handling past-due invoicesReview aging reports and direct AR team efforts to maximize collectionsProcess Improvement & Internal ControlsContinuously review accounting processes and implement improvements to increase efficiencyDevelop and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Strengthen internal controls through consistent review of duties and processesImprove the auto invoicing processDevelop KPIs and processes to ensure timely invoicing in the billing departmentDriver & Operational SupportReview and approve IC Driver SettlementsHandle driver-related issues via phone and in-personAssist with driver orientation and attend Driver Safety MeetingsReview and manage Driver Turndown Reports and Freight Turndown Reports (ensure accountability, deadlines, and compilation)Additional ResponsibilitiesMonitor and streamline Accounts Receivable processesSupport KPI development and tracking for key accounting activitiesInterface with drivers and operations teams as neededQualifications & ExperienceMinimum 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a transportation, logistics, or trucking companyStrong experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (required)Proven supervisory and staff training experienceThorough knowledge of month-end close processes, reconciliations, and journal entriesExperience with internal controls, process documentation (SOPs), and process improvementExcellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skillsStrong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with drivers, staff, and senior managementPreferred SkillsPrevious experience as an Assistant Controller or Accounting ManagerFamiliarity with driver settlement and payroll processes in the transportation industry
