Teaching Assistant: Engineering Projects

About the Program Engineering Up (www.EngineeringUp.org) is an after-school program which gives Rochester City School District (RCSD) high school students meaningful engineering experiences while showcasing how fun building arduino-based projects can be. Example projectsinclude RC cars, plant monitors, and air quality monitors. Students plan, build, document, and present their project while attaining the skills and confidence to independently build projects and apply to jobs, internships, and colleges. This program is operated as a mission of St. Luke and St. Simon Cyrene church and is funded by donations to allow students to attend at no cost. About the Position This is a part-time position expected to require 5 hours per week. While classes run from October 10th through December 8th, there is some preparation work which will begin a couple weeks in advance. Instructors will work with students to show how to plan, build, troubleshoot, and document a project from start to finish. The class has a student:staff ratio of 5:1 composed of carefully selected students who are keen to start their engineering career. Responsibilities: - Assist the lead teacher in implementing lesson plans and instructional activities to guide students to build an Arduino-based project of their own - Teach methods of troubleshooting their project without 'doing it for them' - Collaborate with the lead teacher to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment - Help manage classroom behavior and ensure a safe and respectful learning environment - Utilize learning technology and software to enhance student engagement and participation - Perform data entry tasks to track student progress and assessments The ideal instructor candidate will have: Experience with arduino-based projects (or similar) including troubleshooting skills Experience teaching/guiding others A positive, engaging, and/or approachable personality A drive to share their passion of building projects with others Excellent communication skills, unfettered honesty and integrity, and the ability to work with minimal supervision This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on RCSD students' education while gaining valuable experience in the field of education and contributing to more diversity in the engineering field.
