QC Lab Manager

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Technology and Lab Operations, the QC Lab Manager’s main task is to oversee all aspects of Third Coast’s quality control laboratory. This role will effectively coordinate with operations, sales, customer service, planning, HSSEQ and external customers. This role will ensure the QC lab follows Third Coast’s HSE standards and procedures. This role is responsible for samples being tested accurately and results reported timely. This role will oversee staff development, scheduling, equipment calibration, resources allocation, and process improvement to ensure the lab operates efficiently and safely.Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Follow the daily/weekly production schedule of Third Coast’s plant operations to make sure the samples brought to lab are logged and tested accurately, the results are documented and shared timely and clearly, the samples after testing are stored or disposed properly. Responsible for QC lab employees’ hiring, training, goal setting, appraisals, promotions, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Leads the Lab Intern program involving training and scheduling. Make sure all the instruments are in good condition and ready for use by adhering to the schedule to run SQC samples. Maintain the laboratory calibration schedule, ensuring all calibrated equipment is up to date. Schedule outside vendors for preventative maintenance work, external calibration requirements, and other equipment needs. Responsible for all procurement needs including new instruments, certified standards, reagents, consumables, and safety needs. Sustain a safe work environment by following Third Coast’s policies, OSHA and EPA established guidelines. Communicate with QC personnel about the potential hazards of chemicals, equipment, and conduct proper lab safety training. Abide by accepted industry standards including ASTM, SAE, ISO, DMV, and other customer specific requirements. Support the ISO certification efforts of the facility by proper documentation, SOP’s, and overall Quality program of the Lab. Review the QC requirements such as sampling schedule, testing methods, QC specifications, and sample retain period of new products brought to Third Coast and make sure the lab is ready on time. Troubleshoot production issues and make necessary adjustments to bring the outofspec product into spec. Observe the trend of production and make recommendations for process improvement. Review plant operation documents, mainly blending instruction, packaging instruction, shippers and receivers to make sure the process is logical and the required sample is taken in documents. Keep great communication with customers on product quality issues. Build the company’s quality image and customers’ satisfaction ratings by evaluating/investigating product quality issues and communicate these findings and/or corrective actions back to Plant Management and the customer. Maintain current knowledge by attending seminars, lectures, meetings, and professional conferences Draft, implement, review, and update SOP for all current analytical instruments or test items Track and manage the QC laboratory’s budget. Exhibits and practices the Third Coast Way fundamental behaviorsEducation and Experience: Must have a bachelor’s degree in science (preferably in Chemistry, biochemistry, or another related field). MS in chemistry is preferred. 7 plus years of handson experience in a chemistry lab setting, working with chemicals, petrochemicals, and petroleum products (required) Prior experience in chemical or oil and gas industrial. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must be able to work with all chemicals, petrochemicals, and petroleum products Excellent communication, writing, presentation and analytical skills Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously Willingness and ability to work with minimal supervision and to effectively prioritize and schedule workload to meet requirements and deadlines.
