MEP Field Engineer

At Optima Engineering, an employee-owned MEP engineering consulting firm, we focus on delivering high-quality mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design solutions for buildings across the Southeast. Our projects include higher education, municipal, K-12, and commercial facilities. We are looking for a skilled and dedicated MEP Field Engineer to join our team and help us continue to provide thoughtful and efficient designs for our clients.RequirementsRegistration as Professional Engineer in North CarolinaBachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management or equivalent hands-on field experienceMinimum 5 years of hands-on field experience inspecting and evaluating MEP/FP installations for Higher Education, Municipal, K-12, Commercial and other various project typesFamiliarity with applicable building codes, construction safety regulations, and industry standards governing MEP/FP workProficiency in Revit and/or AutoCADStrong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skillsValid driver’s license and access to a vehicleResponsibilitiesConduct regular site visits to inspect mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection installations evaluating work against construction documents, specifications, and applicable codesIdentify and document non-conforming work. Issue clear, detailed field observation reports with photographic documentationAssess equipment placement, piping and conduit routing, clearances, support and hanger spacing, labeling, and code-required clearances for correctness and constructabilityDevelop and maintain punch lists. Independently verify completion of corrective work prior to closeout and owner acceptanceAttend pre-construction and construction progress meetings. Provide technical input on sequencing, constructability, and field conditionsReview contractor submittals and shop drawings for conformance with the design documents. Coordinate review with the Engineer of RecordRefer field deviations requiring design-level judgment to the project engineer and track resolution through to closureReview contractor payment applications and change orders for field accuracyServe as liaison between client, contractor, and design team to facilitate timely issue resolutionParticipate in project postmortem reviews for larger or complex projectsSkillsCDT Certification and/or OSHA 10/30 construction safety trainingExperience with North Carolina State Construction Office (SCO) projectsProficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with Ajera a plusWhy Work at Optima EngineeringOptima Engineering is a 30-year-old, employee-owned, multi-discipline engineering firm with offices in Charlotte, Raleigh, Asheville, and Greenville, South Carolina.
