Senior Test & Release Engineer
Soraban builds AI-powered tax workflow software for accounting firms. Our platform processes high volumes of tax documents during seasonal peaks, and reliability, scale, and correctness are critical for our customers.\ \ We’re an onsite engineering team, with offices in San Francisco, CA and Tempe, AZ.Role OverviewWe are hiring a Senior Test & Release Engineer to own test strategy, test automation, manual testing, and release quality across the platform.This is a senior individual contributor role. You will define test plans, perform exploratory testing, build and maintain automation, manage test infrastructure, and enforce quality gates for every production release.You may need to review work from contract SDETs, but you are expected to write and own tests yourself.ResponsibilitiesTest Strategy & CoverageDefine test plans for new features and system changesTranslate requirements and user flows into risk-based test casesIdentify high-risk areas and maintain strong regression coverageDefine and track measurable test coverage goalsTest AutomationBuild and maintain end-to-end tests using PlaywrightDesign coverage across UI and API layersWork with dev team to integrate tests into the CI/CD pipelinesReduce flakiness and improve execution speedRelease Quality & GatesDefine and enforce release readiness criteriaValidate staging before production deploysSupport rollback and hotfix validationReproduce incidents and prevent regressionsReduce escaped defects over timeTest Infrastructure & DataOwn test environments and test data managementEnsure staging environments are production-representative where appropriateMaintain stable CI test pipelines and reportingRelease ProcessWork within git-based release workflows (branching, tagging, hotfixes)Validate release artifacts before production deploysImprove release discipline and rollback safetyPerformance & Risk ValidationPartner with engineering to validate performance for major changesSupport load or stress testing when requiredEnsure system behavior is acceptable under peak conditionsCollaborationWork closely with Product to clarify acceptance criteriaPartner with Engineers during development to prevent defects earlyReview and guide contract SDET contributions as neededRequired Experience5+ years in SDET/test engineering rolesStrong experience with Playwright or similar E2E automation frameworksStrong hands-on manual and exploratory testing experienceExperience building automated test suites from scratchDeep understanding of functional, regression, and integration testingExperience with git-based release workflowsFamiliarity with CI/CD systemsStrong debugging skills and ability to isolate root causesExperience managing test data and environmentsNice to HaveExperience testing SaaS platforms with multi-tenant architecturesExperience with tax or other document-heavy workflow software systemsFamiliarity with cloud environments (AWS preferred)Exposure to performance or load testing frameworksExperience working in high-reliability or seasonal peak systemsInterview ProcessPhone screenTake home test automation assignmentTechnical interview over ZoomConversation with the CEOOfferWe're a small team and move quickly.
