SFCS is seeking a Structural Engineer with approximately 3–7 years of experience to join our Roanoke, Virginia office. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside architects, engineers, interior designers and planners in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while contributing to meaningful projects that positively impact communities across the country.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical foundation in structural engineering, a desire to continue growing professionally, and a passion for delivering thoughtful, practical, and innovative design solutions.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or actively pursuing licensure.
Approximately 3–7 years of experience in structural engineering with a focus on commercial, institutional, healthcare, senior living, educational, or government facilities.
Experience designing structural steel, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, masonry, cold-formed metal framing, and wood-framed structures.
Working knowledge of applicable building codes and industry standards.
Experience with structural analysis and design software such as RAM Structural System, ENERCALC, FloorVibe, StruWare or similar programs.
Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project teams to develop efficient, code-compliant, and cost-effective structural solutions.
Participate in project planning, structural system selection, and preliminary design studies.
Perform structural analysis and design for new construction, additions, renovations, and adaptive reuse projects.
Conduct field investigations and evaluations of existing structures to support renovation and rehabilitation efforts.
Prepare structural calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents.
Coordinate structural systems with architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and civil engineering disciplines.
Develop structural construction documents utilizing Revit and AutoCAD.
Utilize structural analysis and design software to evaluate and verify engineering solutions.
Participate in construction administration activities, including shop drawing review, responses to RFIs, site observations, and evaluation of proposed changes.
Support and mentor junior engineering staff while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders.
Stay current with evolving building codes, design technologies, and industry best practices.
