Taxwell is an organization of forward thinkers looking to add industry experts to our growing team.We’re looking for a Software Engineer II to join our TaxAct Pro Desktop team, building the software that professional tax preparers rely on to serve their clients with speed and accuracy each season. This role focuses on maintaining and evolving our flagship native Windows desktop application—critical software that requires precision, reliability, and thoughtful engineering.This is an ideal role for engineers who have strong fundamentals and want to go deeper into the internals of a mature codebase, into performance-sensitive debugging, and into the kind of platform-level decisions that keep complex systems healthy. You’ll work in both C++ and C#, collaborating with experienced engineers to design, implement, and improve new and existing features across the app and its supporting services.We value engineers who are curious, thorough, and proactive people who not only implement solutions, but take time to understand why the system works the way it does and how to make it better. You’ll also be expected to integrate AI-assisted tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code to improve your velocity while upholding high-quality engineering practices.What You’ll DoDevelop new features and enhancements across our native Windows desktop application using C++Design and maintain supporting services and APIs written in C#Debug and resolve production issues, often in performance-sensitive, multi-threaded environmentsRefactor complex or aging code to improve maintainability and testabilityWrite testable, production-grade code, leveraging AI tools when appropriate to accelerate development, explore options, or improve documentation. Contribute to maintainability not just in your own work, but in how the system fits together overallCollaborate with QA, product managers, and fellow engineers to design and deliver reliable, supportable softwareBuild deep understanding of the Pro domain, the application architecture, and our codebase to contribute thoughtfully, challenge assumptions, propose improvements, and grow your design instincts over timeParticipate in design and code reviews, offering and receiving constructive feedbackBegin mentoring junior engineers or interns through pairing, documentation, and context sharingWhat Sets You Up For Success3–5 years of professional experience as a software engineerProficiency in C++ (including familiarity with MFC or other Windows desktop UI frameworks)Experience with C#, .NET, and Visual Studio toolingFamiliarity with debugging tools, performance profiling, and diagnosing memory or threading issuesComfortable working in large, mature codebases with evolving architectureFamiliarity with AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar)A proactive mindset. You seek out context, ask the right questions, and look for opportunities to improve not just your own work, but how the team builds and maintains the system as a wholeCuriosity about how systems fit together.
