Assistant Controller
Metric Engineering is seeking an Assistant Controller to support the Financial Controller in overseeing core accounting, financial reporting, and internal control activities for multiple companies. This position combines hands-on accounting responsibilities with review, analysis, process improvement, and cross-functional coordination.The Assistant Controller will play a key role in the monthly and year-end close, account reconciliations, management reporting, audit and tax support, and the continued development of reliable accounting processes. The successful candidate will be organized, analytical, and comfortable working across multiple entities, accounting bases, and operational teams.Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Close and ReportingLead and review monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities, including the closing checklist, journal entries, financial statements, and supporting schedulesReview general ledger activity and analyze month-to-month and year-over-year variances, investigating unusual balances and recommending correctionsPrepare or review assigned closing entries, account schedules, assessments, and other designated financial analysesSupport budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, management reporting, audits, proposal-related financial information, and other assigned analysesReconciliations and Internal ControlsPrepare, review, and perform quality-control reviews of balance sheet, bank, intercompany, and other account reconciliations across multiple companiesReview, reconcile, and resolve discrepancies between subledgers, supporting schedules, and the general ledger, including aged, unusual, unsupported, or unreconciled balances, while strengthening related documentation and controlsSystems, Process Improvement, and LeadershipLead accounting projects involving account cleanup, process improvement, standardization, reconciliation tools, workpapers, checklists, and proceduresProvide backup coverage for designated accounting functions, including banking, revenue, billing, receivables, and intercompany activities, as needed to support continuity and segregation of dutiesUse Deltek Vantagepoint and related systems to analyze transactions, validate financial data, improve reporting, and strengthen controlsSupport the Financial Controller and work closely with the other Assistant Controller to address priorities, communicate risks, and maintain appropriate segregation of dutiesQualificationsBachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related fieldCPA certification or active progress toward certification preferredMinimum of 5 years of experience in a similar roleExperience in the architecture, engineering, professional services, or project-based consulting industry preferredExperience with Deltek Vantagepoint or a comparable enterprise resource planning system preferredAdvanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience developing financial schedules and reconciliationsKey TraitsStrong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and financial reporting practicesStrong project management skills and experience leading complex financial projects from initiation to completionExcellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a focus on delivering high-quality resultsAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environmentExcellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organizationCommitment to documenting processes, improving controls, and producing high-quality workReporting StructureThe Assistant Controller reports to the Financial Controller and works closely with the other Assistant Controller and the broader Accounting team. Supervisory and review responsibilities may be assigned based on departmental needs and segregation-of-duties requirements.Note: The responsibilities and qualifications for this position may be revised where necessary to meet the needs of clients and changing needs of the department.Working Conditions:This job operates in a professional office environment.
