Financial Controller

The Law Firm Controller is responsible for managing the financial health and accounting activities of the firm while ensuring compliance with industry-specific financial regulations and best practices. This role involves working closely with the firm's leadership team to provide financial insights, oversee budgeting, and drive profitable growth.Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management and ReportingOversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.Ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial performance to partners and stakeholders.Develop and monitor key financial performance metrics (KPIs) tailored to law firm operations.Budgeting and ForecastingImplement and manage the firm's budgeting and forecasting processes.Provide strategic analysis and insight into budgeting decisions to align with the firm's goals.Compliance and AuditEnsure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and any legal industry-specific financial regulations.Oversee annual audits and liaise with external auditors.Cash Flow and Trust AccountingManage cash flow and maintain adequate funds for operational needs.Supervise trust accounting functions to ensure regulatory compliance.Monitor client accounts and balances, ensuring the ethical handling of client funds.Internal Controls and Policy DevelopmentDevelop, implement, and maintain internal financial controls to safeguard assets.Establish firm-wide financial policies and procedures to ensure consistency and accountability.Team LeadershipLead and mentor accounting and finance staff, providing professional development and oversight.Coordinate with billing, payables, and receivables teams to optimize processes.Strategic Planning and Partner CollaborationAct as a financial advisor to the firm's leadership team, providing insights into growth strategies and cost-saving opportunities.Partner with department heads and practice groups to align financial goals with organizational objectives.Qualifications and SkillsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field. CPA or CMA designation preferred.Experience:10-15+ years of progressively responsible accounting/finance experience, ideally in a law firm or professional services environment.Strong understanding of law firm billing software and trust accounting principles.Skills:Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.Advanced proficiency in financial software (e.g., QuickBooks, Aderant, or Elite) and Microsoft Excel.Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with firm partners and clients.Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.Knowledge:Familiarity with law firm operational structures and financial nuances, such as contingency billing and cash flow analysis, trust accounts, and partner equity distributions.
