Cobol Programmer

We are seeking a COBOL Engineer to support and enhance enterprise policy administration systems for a stable, legacy-meets-modern environment. This role focuses on maintaining and improving mission-critical applications while partnering with technical and business stakeholders to deliver reliable, well-tested solutions.This is a long-term, direct hire opportunity supporting core systems with high visibility and business impact.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop, enhance, and support COBOL-based applications aligned to policy administration platforms.Analyze business and technical requirements to design and implement effective solutions.Write, test, debug, and maintain high-quality code following established development standards.Participate in code reviews and quality assurance activities to ensure system reliability and performance.Support the full application lifecycle, including development, testing, deployment, and production support.Investigate and resolve defects and system issues through root-cause analysis.Maintain clear technical documentation for programs, processes, and system updates.Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling, coding standards, and development practices.Support DevOps and testing efforts, including test planning and validation activities.Required QualificationsStrong professional experience with COBOL, including Net COBOL, in enterprise environments.Solid understanding of software development principles and the full application development lifecycle.Experience working with relational databases and SQL.Familiarity with C#/.NET applications and modern development tools is preferred but not required.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in legacy or complex systems.Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical and business teams.Clear written and verbal communication skills.Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Microsoft 365 Copilot, with good judgment around validation, security, and responsible use.Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related discipline preferred.Equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of formal education.Prior experience supporting insurance or policy administration systems is strongly preferred.Preferred Technical ExperiencePolicy administration and core insurance systems.Experience with distributed COBOL environments, such as Fujitsu NetCOBOL (.NET COBOL) strongly preferred. This role does not involve mainframe COBOL..NET COBOL development.Git and Microsoft DevOps.Agile development environments.Experience contributing to system modernization, performance improvements, or technical debt reduction.
